Open thread: iPhone 3.0 upgrade experiences

Something's coming... Since having 100,000 people download a software update is just about as exciting as can be, we're opening up a liveblog in the 2nd half of this post to let you ask questions, share observations and generally get your 3.0 on.

The TUAW bloggers will be passing through the chat during the afternoon as everyone has a chance to download and install the new software. Looking forward to hearing how it goes for everyone!

UPDATE: Yes, iPhone OS 3.0 is here and should be available via iTunes. Read more here. We're still covering installs and reports below.

Another update: We are moderating comments, so if yours don't appear, we love you, but we're getting about 200 comments a minute and there's only so much bandwidth. Please be patient.

Since updating to 3.0 on an iTouch, I have been plagued by an occasional inability to trash a Mail file. With the open file, tapping the trash icon results in its glowing highlight, but the file doesn't move. The only solution I've found is to turn off the Touch and turn it back on. Trashing Mail files works. Until the next time.

Apple is a FILTHY LIAR!!!!

Stereo Bluetooth still DOESN'T WORK!!!!!!!!!

I have a Jabra SP700. It actually worked before the update (I had to start a song then switch to the voicemail screen and I could hear music) now it doesn't. Which proves that Apple could have enabled it during the upgrade.

Has anyone heard from Apple on this?

Do you by any chance have the original iPhone? Stereo bluetooth is only available on the 3G or 3GS.

Upgrade went relatively smoothly after the initial hiccup of the activation server was overcome.

Now trying to spot all of the new features that haven't got much publicity so far...

1. If I divert my phone to my landline I get a divert symbol to remind me I've done it!
2. Outgoing calls are identified in the recent call list with a phone symbol
3. Call length and timing are recorded in an improved info page accessed from the call history
4. AppStore menues have been rejigged - now requires an extra menue to be navigated to get to the Updates page :(
5. SMS messages 'send' quicker now. Well, they don't, they send in the background. Look out for Red Exclamation marks indicating a problem with the message being sent rather than thinking it's ok because it's gone 'green'

More as I spot them...

One more thing. If you're in my situation (unlocked iPhone, using o2 on pay and go, or a monthly tariff like Simplicity) don't forget to visit o2's website after updating

http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/settings.html

to change your data settings. I was a bit worried about this too (o2: "You won't be able to get the full iPhone experience"), but don't worry, it works fine.

I second the above. I have an original iPhone, unlocked using QuickPwn a couple of versions ago, operating on o2. I was nervous about the update, but after reading a few comments where people had updated without losing their unlock, I jumped in.

20 nailbiting minutes later, painlessly updated...and fully unlocked. Repeat - just like the person above, no extra hacks, just a straight iTunes update, and I am still unlocked (don't know about jailbreak, I stopped caring about that after the app store), but now with 3.0 goodness.

I'm not saying this will work for everyone, with every carrier, with every unlock method, but just adding my name to the list of people for whom it worked just fine.

As an aside, to all the people who are slamming apple over their server slowdown, or even better, lamenting the "missing" features (comments like "No video camera? No compass? No MMS? Seriously, when will Apple ever get it right?"), I have a great idea for you...

...buy a Nokia. Or a Motorola. Or pretty much any other phone. I promise you will never again have to put up with lengthy, frustrating updates. You'll never have to join the queue of millions trying to downlaod those free updates at the same time. You can just relax and enjoy years of using the same features it came with out of the box.

I have an iPhone 2G, unlocked (back in 2.2 using PwnageTool), still running with original AT&T SIM active and installed. (I only use the unlock to enable different SIMs when traveling abroad).

Anyway, I was on 2.2.1 and upgraded to 3.0 using standard iTunes, no hacks, normal method. Upgrade went flawlessly, no iTunes problems, and my phone is still working on AT&T, and is also still unlocked (tested a couple of SIM cards). Only thing I have noticed, as a few people have mentioned, YouTube doesn't seem to be able to connect anymore. Not really a big deal for me.

I may have been lucky because even though my phone is unlocked, I'm still using the original carrier (AT&T) SIM. If you have an unlocked iPhone using a different SIM, I dont know what will happen.

As background: this phone was unlocked and jailbroken with PwnageTool back in 2.2. When I upgraded to 2.2.1 I just used iTunes with no hacks, like this time. Phone remained unlocked, on 2.2.1 but jailbreak was gone (no big deal, I only care about unlock, not jailbreak). This was the state from which I did today's upgrade to 3.0.

It seems the iPod search (just the one on the iPod app, not the one which searches all your device) doesn't like Frank Zappa. Look, it doesn't find any results for Zappa solo nor his previous band The Mothers of Invention: http://i39.tinypic.com/21j9myp.jpg http://i44.tinypic.com/zwb3gk.jpg Weird!
