Some reports of iTunes issues while upgrading to 3.0

A bit late to the party, I started the process of updating my iPhone at 3:00 PM Eastern. iTunes downloaded the update without a problem, but the install process was halted with the error message:
"The iPhone [your iPhone] cannot be updated at this time because the iPhone activation server is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."
From there I've got two options: OK, which simply closes the dialog box, and More Information, which points a browser to a Knowledge Base article on iPhone activation issues. Mike also noted the appearance of an error -4 dialog earlier.
It looks to us like Apple's servers are getting slammed hard. A bit of patience ought to do the trick; you might also benefit from restarting both iTunes and your iPhone. Still, the whole thing makes me feel like Veruca Salt: "But I want an Oompa Loompa NOW!"

tried to update my iphone. then the itunes moniker and the plug in used to connect to the computer come up and now it tells me that my phone is in recovery mode and i have to reset. but won't i lose all of my contacts and calendar info if i do that? what else can i do?
the update process worked nicely but, unfortunately, now i have SLOW BACKUP syndrome.
DAMN! don't they test they're software before releasing?
The whole UI (lines) in my contacts are messed up. Very strange. Looks half baked at best.

June 17 2009 at 7:35 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI was frustrated like everyone else by my inability to update my iPhone 3G to iPhone OS 3.0 due to the iPhone Activation server not being available. I wrote a quick 6 step fix for this, which has worked for myself and 14 others - flawlessly every time.
Please note: In order for the steps below to work, you MUST already have the iPhone OS 3.0 update on your PC/MAC which you downloaded either through iTunes or Apple directly.
1. Plug in your iPhone into your USB Port
2. Select Update
3. While on the Extracting screen for the update, quickly disconnect from the Internet. You MUST do this while it is extracting, as it will immediately try to contact the Apple Servers once it has extracted the update.
4. Your iPhone and iTunes will not even try to check in with Apple because they realize you are in offline mode. This will enable the update to go through and load onto your iPhone without having to call out to the Activation Server.
5. Now, when it's all done, you'll be "stuck" in emergency mode. No worries. Just unplug your iPhone from your USB (You'll still be in emergency mode) and go ahead and turn your internet back on again. Make sure to wait until your iPhone disappears from the list of devices in iTunes!
6. Once you are back online, simply plug in the iPhone USB cable again, and then iTunes will quickly activate your iPhone in a matter of just 2-3 seconds.
Enjoy iPhone OS 3.0 :)

I think I probly messed things up more...
Had to use my work PC to update (my mac is not online), so I couldn't get a backup made.
Had full progress bar with apple logo...
Nothing for over 30 minutes.
Unplugged.
iTunes said I had to "restore" instead of update... so I probly lost my goods....
I dumb++
Mine is stuck with a full progress bar and nothing is happening... what do I do? Unplug and try again?!?!
I got the 3.0 update after the third try... then I tried to update my apps and I keep getting an error message... can't purchase the app because the network connection has been reset...
Does anyone know how I can resolve this?
I keep getting the error 9006, anyone know what it is?
