Munster: Apple to sell 500,000 units of iPhone 3G S this weekend
Everyone's favorite Apple analyst, Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray, is positively bullish on Apple and the iPhone. In a forecast released today and reported in AppleInsider, Munster says he expects Apple to sell a half-million units of the iPhone 3G S this weekend. This is much more than the 270,000 first-generation iPhones sold in the first weekend in 2007, but pales in comparison to the 1 million mark set last year with the release of the iPhone 3G.
The difference this year? When the iPhone 3G was released in 2008, the new equipment was also accompanied by a drop in price and availability in 21 countries. For new users, the 3G S is the same price as the 3G, and the release of the 3G S tomorrow will only happen in 8 key market countries.
Munster's other prognostications include a total of 3 million iPhones sold in June for a quarterly total of 5 million, and an estimate of 7 million sold in the upcoming September quarter. He continues to rate AAPL as a buy, and has a $180 target share price for Apple.

"For new users, the 3G S is the same price as the 3G"
It might be over in the States, but over here in the UK it's twice the price of the 3G, which hasn't changed price...

I think Munster is smoking crack.
The fact that AT&T had to extend the subsidized rate to 3G owners who spend more then 99 bucks per month (and are thusly, their best customers btw) is pretty clear evidence that someone in corporate at Apple, AT&T, or both, is worried that the 3Gs won't sell as well as the 3G did. If the sales are lower, watching Apple try to spin it as a success is going to be entertaining.

Not going to happen. I think AT&T and Apple are in for a big surprise this weekend when they realize that the 20 million people that ran out last year and bought a 3G aren't ready to throw down another $500 on a new phone.

I'm pretty sure they won't be. That is afterall why they sell the 3G, correct?
The App Store is still very profitable, the 3G S is just to keep the marketig ball rolling. Apple's business plan is perfect. One year (or 18 months) of big updates and then a similar time period off, depending on certain market demands and trends. This is proven true just by looking at this year--so far--and 2008. In 2008 we got the MacBook Air, the iPhone 3G, new iPods, and the Unibody MacBooks. 2009 has only shown updates to these products.
Of course, there are always exceptions.

Guess that puts a damper on the 100k sold by Palm since launch

Whether with the 3G S, or the 3G, iPhone users have access to a wealth of very useful applications in the app store. Take Shoofa DC for example - it provides location based access to food and drink promotions in the Washington DC metro area, effectively saving residents and visitors tons of money.

I'm not buying one. Not until AT&T gets their act together. Besides, come next summer we'll see another upgrade... 4G or Nano or Air, or...

...or not much really. Other companies flush out tons of models every year and Apple just barely upgrades the same one bar of soap with a screen. And just now it seems they reached their plateau with the 3GS being a very small improvement over what was offered last year.

With strong brand recognition, innovative and unique products, solid technology, and profitable financial numbers, Apple appears to be a very successful company. Its current share in the PC market, however, is very small. In order to be a major competitor in the PC market, Apple should consider altering some of its current positioning strategies. With a few changes, a desirable increase in market share could result.
