iPhone 3G S Launch Day: More pictures from the field

We snuck past the line into the glass cube, and got some pictures of the well-behaved crowd downstairs in the 5th Avenue store who were buying and activating their phones (and also checking out the new MacBook Pro lineup while they were there).

Erica's in line at the Cherry Creek Mall in Colorado and sent us a few quick snapshots.

Why are people waiting in line for the 3Gs? Why wouldnt you have just pre-ordered to have it delivered to you today? Pure fanboy-ism?
There's quite a line at the SoHo store too.

Among other reasons, the online system couldn't cope with certain types of contract. My line had some sort of discount attached to it, so I could only reserve and collect in store.

FedEx just delivered mine (noon, 6/19/09). Sure beats waiting in line.
I'm upgrading from the original iPhone to iPhone 3GS. Backing up my old iPhone to prepare for the activation process. Wish me luck!

Allow me to enlighten you on something you may not be aware of. I am so very tired of hearing the term FANBOY used all across TUAW, Engadget, CNET, and everywhere else! Having a love (or obsession) for technology, whether it be with a product, or a tech company, or whatever else, is not FANBOY-ISM! This is not a real word, it is a made up term created by people who dislike a particular company, and/or product for numerous reasons.
Is standing in a line waiting for a product for more than 12 hours obsessive?...YES. But Fanboy-ism?... Not at all. I personally agree with you that all of these people could have just pre-ordered the iPhone 3GS and had it delivered rather than wait outside braving the elements...but where is the fun and excitement in that?! hhhmmm? I had an awsome time in 2005 waiting at my local Walmart for 12 hours for the Xbox 360, and then again in 2006 for the Wii. It may be obsessive but do everyone a favor and put an end to this fanboy crap!

We did the Cherry Creek line last year and it was fun.
But since we now both already have iPhones (Original & 3G), we went the FedEX route this time for the 3Gs. :) Looking forward to it!

about 30 people in line this morning at the Potomac Yards AT&T store in Alexandria, VA. there were about 10 at 6 a.m. and then the rest filtered in by 7. There were only about 6 of those that pre-ordered and were there for pickup. So those folks went right in at 7(something like 25 people working in the store, heh). the other 24 or whatever had their phones in their hands and out the door by 730.

Long lines at Lennix mall in Atlanta. If you couldn't reserve early, the wait is at least 3 hours.
