iPhone 3G S is crazy fast at 3D compared to iPhone 3G

They didn't just slap an S on the back and call it a day, you know. Apple has improved the 3D performance on the 3G S by including a more powerful graphics processor. According to John Casasanta, the speed increase is up to four times that of the 3G. But don't take his word or these OpenGL ES speed tests as proof -- check out the video and see for yourself.

On a related note, we hear that Apple has done "even more" than we can publicly disclose around speed improvements on the device. That could mean there are further software updates that may make the 3G S even faster. That's the kind of thing Apple loves to do, isn't it? Just look at the Snow Leopard marketing around it being lighter and more efficient. I've usually had (often temporary) system speed increases with updates as well, so here's hoping there's some unused horsepower under the hood just waiting to be unleashed.

I personally would love a comparison with the 1st gen iPod touch I have, just to see how far apple has come, as that model was the most underpowered of all, AFAIK.

Katamari on iPhone 3G was a clunky, slow, fun sucked out of, stale monkey fart. With the new iPhone 3Gs its not only fixed, it crazy fast! I expect 3GS only games in the future.

Not good news for the Apple CEO, apparently he is not in good health.

We hope he improves

Are you slow? Computers can run skype to make phone calls, does that mean they're "just phones"??

The best demonstration was the game Oregon Trail. On my iPhone 2G it was painful to play with long, long load times. On the iPhone 3G, it is a plain joy.

At first I really wasn't all that excited for the release but now with all of these speed tests coming out in addition to ATT being cool with current contracts I right on the brink of getting one.

While AT&T might be "cool" in letting people get another subsidized handset a few months early they are TOTALLY SCREWING everyone without a contract (PayGo / Pick Your Plan)

First kudos to taptaptap for showing this video even though they were using unoptimized code that makes there app look lame on the 3G... most developers don't have the guts to do something like that.

Second, I highly doubt apple will ever unlock 720p. The obvious questions being: "Why would you want 720p on a mobile device?". "Would you really want to buy all the hardware you'd need to output the signal to a 720p display?", "Could the dock connector is even handle that bandwidth?", and finally "Wouldn't decoding 720p devour that little iPhone battery in about 15 minutes?".

NEON specific framework optimizations? NEON seems fairly flexible and can be used for anything from compression / decompression algorithms to audio / video acceleration and 3D graphics. Even supports 64-bit integer data.

Well it could also mean your code sucked from the beginning. 3 times faster! How quickly we forgot about OS X 10.0; it took until 10.1 to make it useable.

To be fair though, WebKit (the rendering engine behind Safari) has always been about speed. In their regression tests, they don't implement *any* new code if it slows down page rendering.
