iPhone icons all over the place in version 3.0
I saw this myself yesterday. My AT&T Navigator app which I am testing for a forthcoming review, somehow acquired my Reuters News icon.
I deleted the AT&T app and re-downloaded it, but that didn't help. I reset the phone and that didn't help either. Finally I did a sync with all the apps turned off in the iPhone apps tab, then did another sync with my apps on. That restored the proper icon, but some of my apps acted like they had been downloaded for the first time and I had to set them up again.
This is clearly a real bug that Apple will have to address. There are some other solutions floating around on the Apple message boards, such as deleting the app, downloading it again, and restarting the phone. If you have the problem, I'd suggest you try the easiest solutions first.
Some other users are seeing icons turn white, while other app icons simply disappear. One developer said this was a common issue before the final release of the 3.0 software, and he was surprised to see it now.
Let us know if you've got this affliction and what you did to fix it, and be sure to let Apple know.
Thanks to Steve for the tip.

I have also experienced this affliction on my new iphone 3G S. It started on about the 4th or 5th page of icons. One turned white and there after about 5 mismatched their titles.
I followed the advice on this post http://modmyi.com/forums/apple-appstore-app-discussion/640771-iphone-3-0-white-blank-mixed-up-app-icons-2.html which said to:
1. delete an app
2. start re-downloading it.
3. pause the download.
4 restart the phone.
5. resume download.
This seems to have worked!
I noticed this problem on my iPhone 3G S. I had been downloading various apps for a week or so. It wasn't until I decided to remove a couple of them that the problem popped up. I tried restarting the iPhone didn't work. I've heard that deleting the app off the phone and reinstalling it will fix it; but, that doesn't sound like a solution to the problem, just a temporary fix.

July 21 2009 at 10:33 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis issue has happened to me multiple times on my 3GS. The only thing that seems to fix this very annoying problem is to completely restore my iPhone. I have restored my iPhone twice now. Last night it happened again after one of my apps crashed. It affected my Twittelator app (happened to be the last app that I had recently downloaded). The interesting thing about this particular crash is the icon that it changed over to was from an app that I had deleted over two weeks ago. This time I am just going to live with it I don't want to restore all over again just to have it happen again. Hopefully Apple will fix this bug. It is very annoying.
July 21 2009 at 11:38 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI had the same problem on my 3G using OS 3.0 as well as my 3Gs. It occurs more frequently on my 3Gs. It only occured once on my 3G prior to OS 3.0 - that one incident may have been a fluke.
I found the only reliable way to resolve the issue is to delete all apps from the iPhone that have the wrong icon (you'll might be suprised if you check them all first), power reset the iPhone, then sync with iTunes twice. After the first sync, the apps deleted on your iPhone will become unchecked in iTunes - reselect them and sync again.
Re-downloading the app over the air barely has a 50/50 sucess rate, even then the icons reveryt back to the incoreect state after a short period.
This just happened to me on my new 3Gs, after I reset it. I synced, removing only the affected apps, then synced with all apps, replacing them. Seems to have worked.
July 11 2009 at 2:34 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAfter downloading new apps, I have no problems. But if I reset the phone, the new app icon would either be blank or acquire another app icon. I can easily fix the problem by removing the app via the itunes sync and re-installing it. But, another reset of the phone will screw up the icon again. The only permanent fix I know of is a full restore of the phone. After a restore, the icons are all correct even after a reset. Lets fix this bug Apple!

July 03 2009 at 9:15 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOn my 3GS, when an app gets a wrong icon, it doesn't switch icons with the other app, it duplicates the icon. The weird thing is, though, all of the apps with a wrong icon have sort of been grayed out. I have seen this greying happen to random icons before on the various 2.x firmwares, but I am not sure what it means.
July 01 2009 at 2:28 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI had my first encounter after only a few hours with my new (and very sheik and classy white) iPhone when I noticed the Huffington Post and Google Earth icons went crazy.
The HuffPost icon turned solid gray while the Google Earth icon is a duplicate of the paper toss game icon but dimmed.
The only way to get them back was to backup the apps to iTunes, remove them then add them again. Hopefully I won't have to do this too many times especially with apps that have saved data as you lose everything when you uncheck them during syncing.
Hopefully Apple has a patch on the way.
