Doom Resurrection on the iPhone now, lots more id games to come

Fellow shooter fans rejoice -- id software's John Carmack has begun delivering on his love of the iPhone with a brand new game made just for the platform called Doom Resurrection, available right now on the App Store for the price of $9.99. There's nothing small about this game at all -- it offers up 76 mb of original id shooter, including eight levels total, six on Mars, and two more (spoiler?) in Hell, all set in a graphics and control engine designed just for Apple's handhelds (you control aiming with the accelerometer while the game runs you around on rails, and hit the various on-screen buttons to shoot or jump into cover). Unfortunately, there's no lite version to test out (though we can probably expect one eventually, considering Wolfenstein Classic got one), but early reviews say that if you like Doom, you'll enjoy the game.

And that's not all -- besides this original version of Doom, Carmack and id continue to have big plans for the iPhone: Quake and Quake 2 are headed there for sure, and Quake 3 probably isn't far behind, as well as a RAGE-related title. And that doesn't even include the rest of the mobile stuff they have planned: apparently Wolfenstein RPG is ready to go, and Carmack hints that they've got even more original titles like Doom Resurrection here up their sleeve. Good to see a major, established developer like id is really committing to delivering new games for the iPhone.

I just bought this last night... And I havn't gotten very far, but it's freaking awesome. I've played a few FPS type games on the iPhone.... The on-rails shooter is a MUCH better fit. I'm absolutely amazed that this is the first one. This idea is brilliant. The controls are awesome.

Am I the only one that thinks there should be a game controller peripheral for the iPhone? Something sleek like the PSP Go!, but with dual analog sticks.

It could work....

someone *could* make this. it's actually one of the major developer features of OS 3.0 that you can make peripherals that talk directly to the OS.

it's only a matter of time, I'm sure, before we start seeing some controllers to replace any games that make us use tilt-control (I hate tilt-control games)

There is already the GameBone in development, but it looks pretty hideous. I'm hoping for something like this belkin hoax http://toucharcade.com/2008/08/30/belkin-joypod-iphone-gaming-controller-with-app-store-support/

Something that the iPhone goes into like a case, with controls, and a rechargeable battery pack so that it can keep your phone charged as you play like a mophie juice pack.

I don't understand why this is a rails shooter? They've already put out some quality shooter games using the virtual control sticks, so why would they rob Doom fans of the game mechanic they already know?

It looks cool, though. I'm gonna wait for more reviews to trickle in before making a purchase decision.

Oh snap! I bet this thing is already hooked up to add more levels via the new microtransaction system.

You may want to check grammar for the word "begin" in the first line. Feel free to remove this comment after fixing.

Ah, I have such fond memories of Quake 2 - it is one of the few games that I enjoyed so much that I actually finished it. Which is odd given that it wasn't particularly well regarded in the Quake series of games.

I am playing this game as I type it is pretty cool ... I thought the controls would suck since the game does the movement and all you do is aim and shoot but I got used to it really fast I've noticed developers are finally starting to realize the full potential of the iPhone and creating great games and apps for it...there is truly no point for jailbreak anymore ... great games I say its a buy!

I can't wait for the iDisk App from Apple and the TomTom App so my iphone can be complete!

Agreed. I downloaded the game immediately when I saw this article pop up on here... it's a pretty hefty-sized game, but you get used to it being a rail-game unbelievably quickly...

This is without-a-doubt one of the only games actually worth the 10 bucks... unlike SuperbadMonkeyBall (which I CANT BELIEVE they STILL haven't fixed yet), or Spore (which I was gonna say was a complete bore... but can't because it simply sucked).

Next. I want to see Pokemon come out for a non-jailbroken phone... and not one of those wierd new ones... I mean like classic versions like Red and Blue.
