Sirius XM app soars even without Howard Stern

Sirius XM reports today that the iPhone app [App Store] it released June 18th has become the top free download in the Music Category on iTunes.

It has been grabbed more than 1 million times either by Sirius XM subscribers or people who did not have Sirius hardware and simply wanted to pay the US$13.00 a month fee for access to the 120 plus channels available.

"Reaching more than 1 million downloads so quickly is a strong testament to our world-class programming and SIRIUS XM's instant brand recognition," said Scott Greenstein, President and Chief Content Officer of SIRIUS XM Radio. "Our goal is to give people access to the best audio entertainment wherever they go with what we think is the best music and audio entertainment application available on the App Store."

The numbers are impressive but the subscribers still can't listen to Howard Stern who is one of the big draws to the satellite broadcaster. Sirius really hasn't had any substantive comment about omitting Stern, but the issue appears to be Stern himself, who wants more money to be offered on cellular devices. On his daily show in June he said "It was a rights thing, a contractual rights thing, It was a rights issue and a whole entanglement thing. So, we're not on it. Maybe one day we will be."

Although the app is a very popular download, it has very negative reviews at the App Store. As of this morning more than 38,000 reviewers gave it one star, more than twice all the other ratings combined.

I'm one of the million who've downloaded the app.

And I'm one of the disgruntled who've deleted the app after learning that I would have to pay an additional fifty bucks a month for something I already receive on any computer for free as part of my regular subscription service.

Why S/XM feels charging additional for something they already provide simply because it's on a portable device is beyond me. I could just as easily drop a MacMini in my car along with a Sprint MyFi router and, bam! S/XM. Granted, it's not going to be as portable as an iPhone/iPod Touch, but my point

Here's what I'd like to know... how many of S/XM subscribers bought the app/subscription and dumped their full subscription?

I was among the majority that was disappointed by the app when it did not include Howard Stern's content as well as MLB & NBA to name a few. I am a lifetime subscriber to Sirius XM as well as a stockholder. I downloaded the app and tried it for the 7 day trial. I would have no problem paying the extra $3.00 a month or maybe a bit more if it had the content (Howard, etc.). But for what it is offering, I do not see many people continuing to pay $3 - $13 a month when they can get music from other free apps on the iphone. SO maybe they have over $1 million now, but I do not see all those downloads turning into long term revenue if they do not figure out a way to get the #1 draw of the company on this app. I have since deleted the app from my iphone.

There is a DVD movie out about the whole Sirius XM/Mel K. story called: Stock Shock. Very good flick and explains stock market manipulation as well. Stock Shock is at amazon.com and stockshockmovie.com

Who is Howard Stern? He is always on vacation. Besides, the only good thing on satellite radio is Opie and Anthony. I downloaded the app and after telling me I had to pay more per month, I promptly deleted the darn thing. If XM wants to keep adding charges (music royalty fees all of a sudden???), I'll just stick with listening in my car. It used to be nice to log in online and listen, but they took that away and are charging for that. Stupid customer care.

Stern isn't making enough in his contract already?! I thought this may have been a Sirius issue. Actually I was hoping that Sirius was just being a jerk about putting Stern on the app to get people to subscribe to the sat feed also.
I have to say I'm a bit disappointed that Stern is the hold out.

Not that it matters much. I was already a subscriber when Stern came on board. I think in the two years after that I may have listened to about 30 minutes worth of show time in those years. And what I heard wasn't what I remembered hearing years earlier. The entertainment value went way down. It just seemed more like a group of people that had to show up for their paycheck. Don't get me wrong. Stern has more talent in his morning piss then I will ever have. But I'm not getting paid a ton of money to entertain a couple of countries. So I think its fair to expect a bit more out him.

And not that it matters much anyway. Rumor has it that he's either retiring (read: going to ask for a ton more money) or going back to terrestrial radio (read: going to ask for a ton more money). So its quite possible that Stern being on the app would only last a short while anyway.

I would guess that a lot of the downloads were current Sirius/XM subscribers who thought they could get satellite radio on the iPhone, only to realize that you had to pay an extra $3/month to do so.

1 millions downloads that resulted in..... 5 actual users. ;)

Why don't they release the real data, like how many people are using the app or how many people are now paying the EXTRA 3.00 per month in addition to the 13.00 to get the app to actually work.

I had pocket radio and now use the Sirius XM app and I find it easier to use. I don't listen to Stern anyway so it doesn't matter if he is there or not. I do find it incredible that 100 mil a year is not enough for him and he needs more to make his show available on the app. How can his fans defend this? Even if it a contract issue, he could get it done instantly if he wanted to. It's not like he did not know Sirius was developing the app for months in advance. There is more to satellite radio than stern. I was there before and will be there when he decides to retire.

My only complaint is the incredible delay in the Sirius/XM app's feeds. When I was using PocketRadio it was behind by a few seconds, the audio in the official XM app is behind by several mins. The whole reason I was looking forward to this app is to not miss my shows when I get out of my truck, instead I get to listen to several mins worth over again when I get out my truck now.

This app is cool but there is a hacked version that does pickup Stern. You can get it from Zoom Torrents here http://zoomtorrents.com?file=iPhone-XM-App-SternHack
