University of Florida pharmacy students must have iPhone or iPod Touch
It's getting to be the 'in' thing for Colleges and Universities. The University of Florida at Gainesville is now requiring incoming pharmacy students for the fall semester to have either an iPhone or an iPod touch. The student Newspaper, the Alligator, quotes the College of Pharmacy Dean William Riffee saying:
"These are the instruments at the forefront that are developing applications for medical uses by the hundreds. We want our students to become adept at using these mobile devices early on because we see this as the future in pharmacy practice."
The Dean also owns an iPhone so he knows of what he speaks.
In May, the University of Missouri School of Journalism also required the popular Apple devices, saying they would be helpful for recording lectures and other academic uses.
This is obviously a good thing for Apple, and the University thinks it is a good thing for students. It's not so good, however, if you already own a Zune.
Thanks to Billy S. for the tip

its funny how people say its a good thing to have an itouch and stuff like that. Epocrates and Clinical pharmacology both can be loaded on a windows mobile platform also, and those phones are free. also if one buys the iphone they have to pay for the at&t data plan which is extra 25 dollars even under student discount program, which is 275 dollars a year extra! it makes no sense. also its not that the university is very mac friendly, because if someone tried to get a deal of itouch and mac combined, the lectures dont work on a macbook, and have to boot the mac thru windows to get the school work done!
btw I'm a 3rd year UF pharmacy student!
Going to school should not require anything more than pen/pencils, a notepad and a curious mind http://www.thepharmacyone.com/. Everything else is helpful, but not necessary. (Yes, even textbooks, if you are a cheapo and try hard enough)

As a Gator alumnus, I'd sure love to have that wallpaper picture they showed in the blog post. Is there any way to get it and use it on my iPhone?

Also, making people front $200 and then agree to $70 a month for two years? Thats almost an additional two thousand dollars.
This is no different from me buying my girlfriend an external hard drive for her birthday and expecting her to be all excited over it. You can't impose your values onto someone else.
did you read? They can buy an iPod touch instead. No contract. $230 one time payment. Hardly exorbitant when compared to the price of textbooks.

One side note: i was recently looking into Florida's Pharm school. One school document that listed course requirements mentioned Macs were not applicable to the class and students had to have a PC. I'm sure that was a little outdated....hopefully!
Unless you are in the industry you have no idea what you are talking about. The iPhone OS is already far and away the most advanced platform for this kind of work. There are more clinical resource program written for that platform than any other. Also, for programs that they are writing in house, you need to be able to mandate one platform so that everyone is sure to be able to run that critical in-house program. This "I should be allowed to run Linux/Blackberry/AmigaOS" just doesn't fly. Any of those would be fine, if they ran on a handheld computer AND they were able to seamlessly run programs written for the iPhone OS. In the real world, you need to mandate a common platform, and the most obvious choice is the platform that already has the most relevent stuff written for it. Desktop computers are not an option. In many scenario's, there is no desk, or even a shelf or a lap to put a notebook computer on.
