A funny Microsoft ad? Yes
I'm not a big fan of Microsoft marketing and promotion. The Seinfield/Gates ads left my scratching my head, and the Laptop Hunter ads really irritated me.Now Microsoft has released a really clever marketing video, but apparently had to leave their regular (Mac loving) agency behind.
The video, called Microsoft Office 2010-The Movie (YouTube link) was made by Dennis Liu of Traffik Filmworks (we interviewed him last year). He had a free hand and a big checkbook, and the video that resulted is hip, clever, and fun to watch. We even get a quick glance of Clippy's grave.
I was beginning to think that Microsoft was suffering from a complete humor bypass, but this shot at building expectations and mindshare for Office 2010 is a sure winner.
And remember that Microsoft will offer a free, web based stripped down version sometime next year that supports the Mac on Safari or on FireFox.
Now what happened to Microsoft Bob?

OMG, Clippy is DEAD!
Actually, after watching this video in complete HORROR the Vulcan High Command has decided to sue the Evil Empire. They own the patents to V and W hand / multi-touch gestures. Not to mention the mind-meld hand gestures. They are not amused. Not at all! They are sending a couple of jellyfish space craft to take care of this matter once and for all. Redmond is now a Black Hole. Funny, it seems like it always was.
It's got high production values but it's just not funny or current. It's about clippy. They're highlighting the fact that they don't have one of the most annoying features of the past anymore. That's not exactly ABC from glengary glenross.
That's how they're selling office now? We're less annoying than we used to be.
I'm amused that the premise of the fake film is that it is difficult to find something (in this case a font)... pretty much describes my experience with Office 07 perfectly.
Generally entertaining, but it does nothing to encourage me to get the product.

This MS movie is for MS Office user drones. Maybe it'll make them feel sexy and adventurous as they hack away on their plastic keyboards, in their dreary cubicles, using defective software.
I hated Clippy. He deserved to get blown away.
That was pretty good - although it's ironic they make the focused on typefaces - in not a few of my Windows machines (formerly owned since I'm all Mac now) I had serious type issues. Windows on a couple occasions bungled the system fonts and wouldn't restore them, making WindDings my default typeface. For me personally the ad is very tongue-in-cheek since it's trying to make a point against the very thing I had so much trouble with.
I like this ad, but it's a shame that Microsoft Office is absolute gash compared to iWork '09.
Why doesn't microsoft just make good software? They will die in the next decade if they don't - mark my words.
â¦so that was an actual ad by Microsoft?
I watched it yesterday and was thinking "better production quality than most fan parody films out there, but not as good as some. At least it's just a fan parody and not an actual Official Ad or anthingâ¦"
Ouch! Didn't like that. Jokes were terribly corny. Made me cringe throughout.
