iDisk for iPhone release hinted at via phantom tech note

We've been waiting and waiting for the official iDisk app for iPhone 3.0 devices -- since WWDC, in fact, when the capability for the Apple-branded file sharing solution was first announced. Now there are hints that the app may actually be on the way. Yesterday, the tech note above briefly appeared on Apple's technical support site before disappearing again into 404-land (full-size screenshot here).
Sure, the note doesn't say much about the functionality or options for the iDisk app... actually, it doesn't say anything at all besides the fact that deleting the as-yet-unreleased app would also delete the data associated with the app (and the note manages to use the wrong "its" in the process). Even so, the appearance of support content for the iDisk app does suggest that the app itself cannot be too far behind.
In the meantime, if you're looking for a handy way to access iDisk and other remote files from your phone, the $4.99 Readdle Docs app was recently enhanced to allow email forwarding of attachments directly to the company's storage solution. Check it out.
Thanks to Kevin for sending in the tip.

Judging by the KBase article, it looks like the iDisk will be an app included in OS 3.1

Possibly...
If the app requires the use of iTools... err... I mean .Mac no wait... I mean, Mobile Me, then it would probably be an add on application released via the AppStore, but if they are incorporating a solution for file sharing that doesn't require Mobile Me, that would be even better!

That can't be right. Not all iPhone users have MobileMe, so why would they include a useless app that 90% of people can't/won't use?
(The Contacts app is an exception...)

Valid points, Chester and Edd. It's just strange that they'd include special documentation for this app with regards to deleting it. I guess it's relating to whatever "data" the app will remove with it.

Umm, no. The knowledge base article specifically says "As with all applications downloaded from the App Store..."

I can't wait to be able to use my phone as a standard USB Mass Storage Device. Bonus points for automatic syncing up to MobileMe. (Might need to bump up that 10GB quota though... you hear me out there, Apple?)
The ramifications of iDisk being interrupted by a phone call are scary, however.

Hopefully for those with a decent connection to 3G, the iPhone should be able to handle voice and data simultaneously without any problems. But who are we kidding...Honestly though, I have noticed that in NYC, my 3G has been much improved. No dropped calls as of yet with the 3GS bought on launch day.

Rumours are that Apple submitted the iDisk app to the app store a few weeks ago, they expected it to be approved by now, but they're still waiting...

check out http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-3g/more-features.html
bottom right of the page:
"Share files with just a tap.
With the iDisk app — free on the App Store — you can share files that are too big to email. Choose your recipients and iDisk sends an email with a link to download your files."
it even has a picture of the iDisk app on the iPhone

Looks like its only for mobileMe users?
andrew said 3:55AM on 7-21-2009
unfortunately yeah
its under "iPhone and MobileMe"
even the icon has that little MobileMe cloud. what a shame.
Michael Rose said 10:28AM on 7-21-2009
Garpunkal: I suppose without a MobileMe account you could still use it to access other people's iDisks... but it is primarily an iDisk-access app, so only MobileMe subscribers would be able to make regular use of it anyway.

I believe they used the word "it's" correctly, they were referring to the data being the iPhone's, or "it's," so I believe They were right.
I would be wrong, but most probably right, plus, Apple knows that if it makes a mistake a kitten must die.

it's is only used as a contraction. (it is, it has). its refers to ownership.
AriX said 9:05AM on 7-21-2009
Nonono. You're very wrong :p
oboewan said 11:02PM on 7-21-2009
This isn't the first of these grammarfails by Apple.
The word "its" is not in iPhone OS 3.0's internal spellcheck.
I am not making this up. It seriously just tried to correct it for me.

I sure hope Apple is going to release this app soon (like: this week) or else it will become the tomtom of file storage apps!
