iDisk for iPhone release hinted at via phantom tech note

We've been waiting and waiting for the official iDisk app for iPhone 3.0 devices -- since WWDC, in fact, when the capability for the Apple-branded file sharing solution was first announced. Now there are hints that the app may actually be on the way. Yesterday, the tech note above briefly appeared on Apple's technical support site before disappearing again into 404-land (full-size screenshot here).

Sure, the note doesn't say much about the functionality or options for the iDisk app... actually, it doesn't say anything at all besides the fact that deleting the as-yet-unreleased app would also delete the data associated with the app (and the note manages to use the wrong "its" in the process). Even so, the appearance of support content for the iDisk app does suggest that the app itself cannot be too far behind.

In the meantime, if you're looking for a handy way to access iDisk and other remote files from your phone, the $4.99 Readdle Docs app was recently enhanced to allow email forwarding of attachments directly to the company's storage solution. Check it out.

Thanks to Kevin for sending in the tip.

I really hope this comes out soon, it'll definitely make me use my iDisk a lot more to be able to view files and whatever other functionality it has.

Why doesn't anyone mention Air Sharing Pro? It already connects to Mobile Me iDisk, as well as any other online storage. They're also getting support for DropBox pretty soon too.

Even if Apple came out with an iDisk app, I dont think it would have near the functionality of Air Sharing.

Maybe because scralpha mentioned it FOUR hours before you did?

Air Sharing Pro already provides access to iDisk on iPhone. Works pretty well based on my limited use of it.

I second that :-) In addition "Air Sharing Pro" allows access to any WebDAV based service and can act as a web server in a local WLAN as well.

airsharing doesn't provide the unique link with expiring password like this app will. Plus, this app is free.

@ Anthony; sorry mate you're off the mark: "it's" is short for "it is", the original poster is correct, it should read "its".

as explicitly explained on the Apple web site, iDisk will be your online storage, i.e. for MobileMe users only. Since all the necessary operations with iDisk are supported by QuickOffice app (including forwarding mail attachments to QO server, making ReaddleDocs unneccessary), the only revolutionary feature of the iDisk app would be if that allows direct storage of email attachments to iPhone, which is really not intended by Apple, I guess. That means, iDisk app is just a nice to have app (for free!), since QO (but for some funny bucks) does much more - it e.g. serves as wifi storage and allows editing of doc and xls files on your iPhone (QO does not support iWork files!). It also sends (large) emails directly from your iDisk without forcing you to download the file to iPhone (like ReaddleDocs). PS: ReaddleDocs is the first (but since the last update of QO not the only) app forwarding email attachments to company's server allowing them for immediate download to your iPhone; this feature has been added several months ago, not recently, as written by the author of this article
