That was fast -- LucasArts has released the
Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition out to the iPhone, and it's
available on the App Store right now for the low price of $7.99. I say low because even though that's higher than many games for the platform, this one is not only one of the best-loved games of yesteryear, but it has also had its graphics completely redone, voiceover added for every scene and character, and a completely remastered musical score as well. Plus, if you get nostalgic for the old version, you can seamlessly switch between the new and old at any time while you play the game. Pretty darn cool.
Plus, the price can also be considered low because this exact same game released
just about a week ago on the Xbox Live Arcade for $10. So not only do you now get to play it in a portable version, you get to play it for $2 less. Hopefully this is the first of many LucasArts classics that we'll see on the iPhone. Just keep an eye out as you play for any really evil-looking doorstops -- we hear they're quite fearsome.

Hear, hear! How about Full Throttle with accelerometer control for riding?
(And oh God! The time I could waste with Sam & Max on the iPhone...)

I would love to see BallBlazer and Rescue From Fractilus on the iPhone...both with accelerometer control.

I just bought it last night too. Been waiting for a good adventure game to come to the iPhone. It just seems like that touch screen was designed for point (tap) and click games. However, the interface doesn't translate well from the PC version. They really should have made it where you tap or double tap an object to interact with it. Instead, you have to drag your finger across the screen to move the cursor to the object, then you can perform an action. This seems to be the most common complaint among the reviewers on the app store so far.

I think there is a double tap but it´s just poorly implemented (works if you hit the exact right area and the cursor is out of the way). The cursor jumping around when opening menus is even worse. Overall an awesome game but the control scheme really need some more love.

An even better deal for Canadians, as it's still $7.99 on the App store, but 800 Microsoft spacebucks is closer to C$12 up here. As long as screen size isn't a major consideration for you.

Wow, did I love this on the PC back in the day. Here's hoping that it translates as well to the small screen. Goodbye $7.99.

To restate the obvious: If iPhone owners support cool apps that cost a little more than the 99-cent wonders, then developers will continue to build them.

I don't have any voiceover dialogue in my version of the game. Am I doing something wrong?

I don't know what it's like on other "i" devices, but on my 3GS, you have to double-tap VERY VERY quickly to be able to select the secondary command (such as "talk to"). They should have a double-tap speed adjust in the settings. Other than that, great!
