TomTom for iPhone pricing leaked
TomTom's co-founder and CTO Peter-Frans Pauwels first demonstrated his company's turn-by-turn solution for the iPhone at WWDC in June of '09. You can watch a teaser video above. Since then, many customers have anticipated this app's release and pricing.
Handtec may have let the cat out of the bag. Daniweb linked to a page listing "TomTom for iPhone including mount" for £113.85 ($193.89US as of this writing) via preorder. That's a bit steeper that we were expecting here at TUAW, but not astronomical. TomTom's stand-alone units range in price from $119 to nearly $400. I hope to use my 3GS as a turn-by-turn device and avoid adding one more "thing" from the car.
How about you? Are you interested in an iPhone-based solution or do you want a stand-alone?

might as well get a standalone gps, it would be more accurate anyway.

That's the point of the TomTom cradle. It uses a mounted antenna to make it as accurate as a stand-alone unit, perhaps even more so.
That said, I don't use GPS enough to justify that expense. A nice navigation app from the App Store is all I need.

If the iPhone doesn't have a jack for an external GPS antenna, how would the cradle help?

It connects through the dock and transmits the data to the iPhone via dock connector. And yes, it can be done, apple allows it under the 3.0 firmware.

Its so expensive because its basically a whole GPS unit without the screen. It has its own GPS chip in there. I don't think its a great idea though, but I can understand why its $200. I had been hoping it was going to be closer to the Navigon software ($70). Maybe it'll get amazing reviews and I'll chuck my old TomTom ONE.

With the iPhone using the agps from skyhook I expect it to perform better than a standalone Tom Tom device unless TT has incorporated XPS as well.

The one thing stopping me from pulling the trigger on this, the TomTom cradle looks like it won't accommodate an iPhone with a case. All my current cradles can be used with the case on. I wonder how much accuracy the cradle adds, as I think at WWDC the cradle was optional.

The cradle is optional. It charges the iPhone while providing an amplified speaker as well as both horizontal and landscape orientations.

No interest whatsoever, especially at that price. I already have a Garmin.

I have been waiting to see if I should get a map upgrade for my Garmin or get TomTom for my iPhone. I think at that price I likely will get the map upgrade if I remember those prices right.

I'd shoot for the upgrade.. I think for about $120 you can get the lifetime deal

I too would like to eliminate a thing and use my IPhone as a GPS. But at $199, the thing I am eliminating will be my paycheck! So I will use MAPS and/or the GPS that I already own.

Totally agree. $200 is ridiculous. I was looking forward to this release also. I guess I'll by the Navigon version instead. Much cheaper and serve the same purpose. Do anyone here own the Navigon App?
John.B said 2:43PM on 8-05-2009
At those prices, the mounts themselves are going to be targets for thieves.

You make a funny but very true point!

the dock is supposed to have a secondary GPS antennae that boosts reception.
the navigon app is decent, but the software doesn't compare to TomTom. I have a standalone Navigon GPS & it's complete crap compared to TomTom. It's cheaper, but doesn't include the cost of the broken window after you throw it through your windshield.

wtf - I was expecting like $49 or something to that effect. I can buy a brand new GPS for well under $200 - Why would I want this?

I had been waiting on this but I think its time to pull the trigger on Navigon

From my experience with a standalone Navigon device, I would say avoid their software. I had the 7200T for about a month before I sold it. Aside from the hardware issues, the software gave terrible directions, and it was not due to inaccurate maps.

This was a mystery? I am almost certain this price was announced at WWDC...it is a software/hardware combo as the "mount" contains a better gps in it...
