Earn a certificate in iPhone and Cocoa Development from the University of Washington

If you've already got a degree or a little knowledge in programming and you're looking to get in on the iPhone app craze (or maybe you wish to write a Mac app -- many people still do) you may want to look at the University of Washington in Seattle. They are now offering a certificate program in iPhone and Cocoa development, which should teach you the basics of iPhone and Mac development in a mere 90 contact hours (three classes).

Ars reports that the program may be extended to an online offering next year. I'd imagine that would be quite popular far beyond the borders of the UW campus. The course itself was developed with a stellar cast of advisors, including developers from NewsGator and OMNI Group, plus experts from Microsoft, Google and Disney Interactive and is "already close to capacity" for this Fall.

While there are myriad books, websites and other resources for learning how to write Cocoa software, this appears to be the first continuing education certification program specifically tailored to writing iPhone apps. Yes, you can write Mac apps too, but I'm guessing the majority of attendees with have mobile dollar signs in their eyes.

Send $2115 to my PayPal account and I will give you 1 on 1 training on Xcode and Cocoa Touch and at the end of your training not only will you be able to develop your own iPhone apps, I'll give you a certificate from any institution you'd like!

I'll show you how to publish your app on the AppStore but I make no promises it will be accepted. WU can't promise that either.

Good luck to those that do this, it looks promising but VERY expensive.

Hey, i know one iphone certification program. This iphone certification program has been launched by Edumobile.org , basically its an iPhone programming Online Course that teaches candidates via Online Video, PDF Documents, One-on-One sessions and Weekly Worksheets.

There is also an option to access a remote Mac, for those who do not have access to one. Candidates get a certification on completion and an option to co-publish their first app on the Apple App Store.

You know, Stanford already offers an iPhone dev class which includes some Mac stuff - it's free and online. Search iTunes podcasts. If it's not there, it may be that they take it down at the end of each semester (or whatever they're on now), so if you catch it at the right time as I did last spring, you can download the podcast classes and watch them at your convenience. And btw - they were good instructors and an interesting special guest.

I don't know...three thirty-hour classes seems like a lot. Is coffee included?

I guess I don't understand why someone would want such a certificate. Typically the benefit to a certification is that it will help you either get a job, or get more money at a current job. The iPhone and Cocoa market seem to be so entrepreneurial that the benefit of a certification is lost because jobs in those fields are not widely available.

So I guess if you're getting it to get it, great. I just don't see a practical reason for it.

It's not so much to say "I'm a certified iPhone Application Developer."

The Certification is jsut a piece of paper. Its the knowledge required to get the cert that is valuable. I wouldn't advertise I got the cert.

I would however advertise that I have experience developing iphone applications.

What do people think of the cost of the program? Is $2115 reasonable? I haven't looked at certificate programs for programijg before so I really have no idea.

Heh, also you can get your Nose in development, or your Eyes on the prize ;-)

Fixed the headline. I had only one sip of coffee when I wrote the headline, yes.
