A Kafkaesque announcement of an Apple keynote the week of September 7th
Kafkaesque is defined as "characteristic or reminiscent of the oppressive or nightmarish qualities of Franz Kafka's fictional world." That's the way Wall Street Journal All Things Digital blogger Peter Kafka (no relation as far as I know) must be feeling. Music industry sources are telling him that Apple is planning one of their classic September keynotes, but they're not giving him a date other than "the week of September 7th", and have no idea what exactly Apple is planning on revealing. That sounds nightmarish to me...
So, he fired up the Apple rumor machine this morning and wrote a post about the upcoming event. Kafka feels that the event will probably be used to announce something about music (duh!), most likely "Cocktail", which is Apple's rumored album format that adds cover art, liner notes, and other interactive goodies.
Kafka also notes that unless Apple announces the legendary iTablet at the event, Apple faithful are likely to be very disappointed (My personal feeling? Turn on the tears, folks).
The September event is often used to announce new iPods, and there have been rumors of a camera-enabled iPod nano, so we might hear more about that.
Whatever happens, it would be nice to see Steve Jobs on the stage again, especially if the mythical iPad is finally announced. Any reader comments on this announcement of an Apple event with no set date or concrete topic will be greatly appreciated.
Update: While Gizmodo's Brian Lam is adding fuel to the iTablet fire with a recounting of a phone call with a reputable source, The Loop's Jim Dalrymple is categorically contradicting any suggestions that the September event will include the tablet device -- it's going to be a pure music announcement, he says.

Some sharp folks looking for Apple product placements in the media have already seen the iTablet or iSlate or whatever it will be called. It appears in many episodes of Wharehouse 13 on the SciFi channel (I refuse to use the new spelling) as an advanced product placement. Here's a clip that "proves" this:

Remember, you heard it here first.
Have to agree, with the Beatles releasing the complete remastered catalog on 9/9/09, and word that they would release to digital music stores when the catalog is re-released this is very likely the big Apple joins Apple event many of us have been waiting for.

I do recollect seeing an Apple patent for a more "interactive" Click-Wheel that would allow for more control, but who knows with all the crazy ideas they've been patenting. Hell, maybe they'll slap one on the tablet for ease of navigation. Don't get me wrong by the way, i've been using an iPhone for 2 years now and love it, but there was just something about the iPod that made me really "feel" my music.
Anyone care to remark?
I'm really hoping that the iTablet will include an eReader and access to public domain titles as well as premium titles (preferably for less than $10 a pop, though that seems unlikely). I've been really tempted to get a Kindle and am somewhat interested in the Sony eReader, but the problem with those is, well, Amazon and Sony. Apple could seriously refine if not re-define that market with an elegant reader.

August 13 2009 at 9:42 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replythis is completely off topic (but on topic, ZOMG, TABLET! YES!), but did i miss any mention of woz's birthday this week?
happy birthday, woz!
Entire remastered Beatles catalog comes out 9/9/09. Maybe something has been worked out with Apple?

August 14 2009 at 8:19 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI saw on apple store that the iPod touch offer with the macbooks for education purchases ends on September 9th. with that guess I think the keynote would be around September 7th and 9th. Cannot wait for the tablet..
August 13 2009 at 4:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe iPod "Back to School" promotion ends September 8th (all Mac/iPods must be purchased by that date). You'd think this event would fall immediately after that.
Question on that promotion. If I bought a mac and ipod next week, could I submit my rebate claim on the ipod immediately after, keep the iPod unopened, and exchange it for a new model after they are released (if in September)?
No, because you have to open the iPod packaging to get at the paper label with the barcode on it which you have to submit with the rebate form, which is inside the plastic pack all iPods come in now.
