Borders survey adding fuel to the iPAD / iTablet fire

As if it isn't getting bad enough with the iPAD / iTablet rumors, now book retailer Borders has been adding to the rumor mill.

Numerous TUAW readers including Jennifer, who supplied the screenshot below, have received a marketing survey from Borders about using Digital Reading Devices (also known as e-readers or ebook readers). Hidden among the responses about Kindles and Sony Book Readers was the response "I plan to buy an Apple iPAD (large screen reading device) this year." Lest any of our readers think that this is just a doctored screenshot, we did receive multiple unique full-screen shots from several readers.
This can mean one of three things:
  1. The company performing the survey for Borders knows something about an upcoming Apple tablet device
  2. The survey company is clueless and loves operating off of rumors and innuendo
  3. The iPAD was thrown in there just to see if anybody would fall for it
The survey also refers to the iPod touch as the "iTouch", so I'm pretty sure that #1 is probably out of the realm of possibility. Still, it's fascinating to see just how pervasive this rumored device actually is!

Thanks to everyone who sent in this tip

Surveys often throw in dummy questions to help calibrate the reliability of the other answers.

4. They know it's a rumor, and they're wondering how many people are letting the rumor influence their purchasing decisions.

#4 is the correct answer.

I think it'll be called the iBook. They've gotta bring that name back, and this device would be perfect.

I can't believe you guys think this is newsworthy...!

Surveys include bogus products and product names all of the time to ensure the people filling out the survey are being truthful or are familiar with the product names.

In this case, they just put up a generic "Apple tablet" in order to see if people are interested in that product.

Let's see, maybe I can post up a survey, make up an Apple product name, and get thousands of people to come visit MY site! :)

It's a more or less common practice in surveys to include bogey items to check the validity of the data.

MAD TV even had the ad for the iPAD a long time ago. ;-)

i don't see borders knowing jack about what is coming up. this is a company that apparently doesn't tell their own retail staff what is about to happen. can't see that being true but they would tell a totally unrelated company.

i think that Borders is just going off the rumors and wants to see if there is enough interest to bother watching what's happening and trying to jump on. they are going broke fast but a deal to be the exclusive non Apple dealer for something like this could help them. so if there was interest they would want to persue

I think if anything a tablet Mac should be called the Macbook touch. But that's just me.

The survey company is clueless for at least two reasons: (1) Apple will never have a product called the "iPAD", and (2) Apple will never make a product that could reasonably be called a "large screen reading device".
