3GS has 99% satisfaction rate, AT&T not so much

A recent customer survey (of only 200 customers -- what are these surveys getting away with only 200 respondents?) claims that the iPhone 3GS has a 99% satisfaction rate. A full 99% of 200 polled iPhone customers claim that they are satisfied with their purchase, while 82% of them claimed they are "very satisfied." That's higher than previously, too: previous versions of the iPhone got a 73% satisfaction rating. You're probably not surprised by this, but guess what? People love their iPhones.

What don't they love about them? 8% said the phone wasn't compatible with their company's IT infrastructure. 41% still say the battery life isn't long enough for their tastes. And a little company called AT&T has drawn the most ire: 55% of respondents say the AT&T network was the worst feature of the iPhone 3GS. So there you go. This just in: ten of eleven Twitterers I just surveyed do like ice cream. That survey is probably just as shocking as the iPhone one, which is not much.

Still, quite a deal Apple has. Your product has almost unanimous satisfaction from customers, and the worst thing about it... is the fault of a completely separate company. Good deal indeed.

FWIW, I've had no problems with my phone since purchase, and coverage is pretty much always 3G in the Pacific NW. We did a road trip down the coast to Cali last month though, and it's absolutely criminal that in Apple's HOME STATE they have probably the worst network coverage of anyplace I've ever been. There is no reason why I should be getting EDGE speeds while walking around anywhere in Berkley, San Francisco or Venice Beach (San Diego, surprisingly, had much better coverage...go figure).

This RBC/IQ survey is undertaken by RBC Capital Markets an international corporate and investment bank, the kind of people who brought us the 2008 recession. I am outraged that TUAW didn't check the true source of this survey..

200 respondents is not even close to being a valid sample, much less 40 for the Pre. How did they pick these ecstatic souls and were they savvy phone users or new-bees. How long have they had their phone? Have they tried or had other newer phones demoed to them? Where they given the phones gratis? Need I mentioned that this “survey company” is in it to make money. What questions were asked. This is pure PR Applesauce rubbish.

There better phones in the rest of the world. And since they are not iPhones, your web browser doesn't crash, google maps doesn't shut itself off in the middle a search, flash is supported, earbuds don't fall apart, your screen doesn't develop black lines, it doesn’t burn up, or worse and you can actually hear someone on your phone, in a crowded room. The reason we don't see many of those great phones is because our networks, for the most part are crap. From all indications, other countries will widely implement WiMax/4G before we do. VOIP will be widely used, and they will still have a local branded network to use as needed.

Fortunately, with a bit of looking, you can find some of these 3g/4g capable phones so you don't have to put yourself in the position of signing up for another iPhone every time Apple says new! New and Improved what? Oh, you finally caught up with what the rest of the world is doing? Almost, comes back the reply from Appleland.

It would be helpful to know who these organizations are and what business they are in at the beginning of the article.

Great job, Apple! Design a great phone, put a crappy, underpowered, buggy as hell radio in it, and your fans will blame AT&T for it's faults! Think Differently!

I am currently on my 3rd iPhone 3GS, so I would love to know where these people got theirs. I got my first one almost 2 months ago and the battery was defective and would last 3 hours max, the second one I got had a defective screen which would "freeze up" at various intervals - basically whenever I had something important to do. The third one I currently have seems to be a different build than my previous 2 and my first gen iPhone the home button seems have a different feel. That one seems to be free of defects so far.

@mfabish: Verizon charges you for every damn thing AT&T gives you for free, not to mention they lock down their phones with their shitty crippled firmware.

I have no issues with AT&T other than price. Their prices are crazy high. Coverage? Sure deep in malls I have no signal. Oh well. Coverage has been improved dramatically here in Los Angeles. Prices? Give us a break! Especially if there are multiple smart phones on the same plan. Spending $2400 a year for two iPhones with data and unlimited texting is INSANE... We use far more bandwidth on our high speed cable internet plan and only pay 1/4 that price. Isn't competition supposed to drive down prices?

I have to agree -- AT&T isn't that bad (as far as service) -- cost is another issue. T-Mobile is MUCH cheaper (but of course for me in FL the coverage is not nearly as good)

$30 for text messages (and MMS -- uh when do I get that?)
$30 for data - (which I use, but $30?! for unused bandwidth?)

I would rate the iPhone 3GS a near perfect, and AT&T a near failure. I'd switch back to Verizon in a millisecond if they offered an iPhone.

AT&T is pure frustration, poor coverage in my area, dropped calls, and blah, blah, blah.

No news there. The iPhone is very solid, well designed, and chock full of useful and versatile functions. The the only problems I have with it is that the battery life is a bit less than satisfactory (although i've long stopped giving a hoot), Apple's tyrannic restrictions over what you can do with it, and then service problems and restrictions (such as mms, download limits, etc) that mainly stem from AT&T's network's inadequacies.

I still don't know why nobody has tried staging a revolt against AT&T. Think about it, if we got something like 500k-1mil iPhone users to spam the network, we could easily bring it down. That's how business should work, the customer should dictate over the supplier, after all, it is our money.
