Twitterrific updated to 2.1, adds many new features
The Iconfactory's Twitter for iPhone client app, Twitterrific [iTunes link] , has been updated to 2.1. The new version has added several new features that make it far more useful than before. A few highlights:- New "Load More..." button at the bottom of the timeline to retrieve older tweets
- New "Following" and "Followers" lists in author view
- Support for recording, posting, and viewing videos (recording and posting require iPhone 3GS)
- Built-in browser now supports landscape orientation
- Image links are now displayed in a photo viewer
- Long uploads now show a percentage completed
- Added in-app email support
The update comes with bug fixes as well, including improved typing speed, plugged memory leaks, and many more.
Twitterrific is the only Twitter client app I've used for my iPhone so far. The free version may be ad-supported, but even before this update its smooth interface and impressive functionality were enough for Twitterrific to make it to my iPhone's first page of apps. So far the update seems to run far smoother, and the added features, particularly "Load More..." and the Following/Followers lists, ensure that this will most likely remain my Twitter app of choice.
I don't have a 3GS, so I wasn't able to test the video upload feature in Twitterrific 2.1. Our own Dave Caolo used it on his 3GS to upload a ten-second film, and he said it took less than thirty seconds to upload it over 3G.
Oddly enough, even though the app has a built-in internet browser, it's still only rated 4+. Other apps have run into approval hurdles from Apple's app store requiring them to be rated 17+ because the built-in browser "could be used to link to objectionable content." Perhaps we're seeing the end of this practice?

I was a Twitterrific user, but I switched to Tweetie some time ago. For what I've seen, it looks like they're taking features from Tweetie: the "load more" button comes from it, the same as the picture viewer.
And it I still feel like paying 3 dollars for tweetie rather than Twitterrific with ads. Tweetie graphics are sweeter, and the difference becomes huge if you compare both desktop apps. Also, the different themes... My vote still goes for Tweetie both for iPhone and desktop app.
Please, give Tweetie a try and let us know if you keep with Twitterrific, I does worth a try!!

Don't readers deserve for a review to at least have some context?
With these new features, I'm now back to Twitterrific at the moment, from Tweetie. The only thing I don't like now about Twitterrific is that marking something a favorite seems to take forever. Is it that way for everyone? Using the "mark" tool is fast, but generally when I mark something a favorite it's because I want to come back to it from my Mac and view it in full screen.

August 20 2009 at 9:36 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI used to keep going back to TwitterFon, but one feature of Twitterrific had me sold: it remembers my place in the timeline between launches⦠no autoscrolling. In TwitterFon, it either scrolls to the top, scrolls to my last tweet, or scrolls to the beginning of the new tweets. I found it anyone as I often don't get to read through all my new tweets in one sitting. Twitterrific made that much easier.
That said, I do still have TF installed, just waiting for an update or two to make it my perfect Twitter client.
I've found the scrolling to be much more jagged and not nearly as smooth as before. Anyone else feel this too?
August 19 2009 at 11:11 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'd second this, it definitely isn't as smooth.
This is running on a 3G, maybe they bumped up the visuals for the 3GS's extra processing power and the 3G will have to struggle through
I've been trying out Tweetings and SimplyTweet just because they both support push messages. I get a notification if someone mentions me (by SimplyTweet). Tweetings is more subtle because it just adds a badge to its icon. Tweetings also only cost $1, and uses that OAuth system, so you don't actually have to give it your password; it takes you to the twitter page and you authorize it as an application that can access your feed.
I tried Twitterific before, and prefered TwitterFon. (Which gave way to SimplyTweet, and now Tweetings.)
Have you tried Tweetie?
August 20 2009 at 10:26 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI finally ditched Tweetie for Twitterrific 2.1. Here's why:
I've always preferred these features in Twitterriffic over Tweetie:
* Much better conversation thread view. In Tweetie, you have to keep tapping "in reply to" over and over. Not cool.
* Nicer looking interface, more polished.
* Much more powerful search feature ("all words" and "any words", and combining those with other criteria as well such as distance).
* In Tweetie you can box yourself into a corner by typing a tweet including a long URL, and go over the 140-char limit, then you're stuck..even if the URL could be shortened, Tweetie isn't smart enough to handle it and you can't post it. In Twitterrific, you can shorten the URL before you post, which is great.
Things that prevented me from switching to Twitterrific 2.0, though:
* Couldn't get a large view of people's avatars
* No password support for InstaPaper
* Viewing TwitPics was lame, opened up in a browser
But now those things are resolved, as well as new added features. It rocks!
Incidentally...where the heck is the InstaPaper option? They sure did hide it, because I can't figure out how to save a tweet to InstaPaper.
"Incidentally...where the heck is the InstaPaper option? They sure did hide it, because I can't figure out how to save a tweet to InstaPaper."
Hmm. Tweetie's instapaper support is awesome. Thanks for saving me the trouble of trying Twitterific again, because that's a showstopper for me.
Nice that Twitterific has picked up some of Tweetie's nicer features. ;-)
Surprised that it still doesn't have push for DMs, I would've thought that would be the must-have feature for a new OS 3.0-specific release...
Coming from an iphone developer - only embedded browsers that allow you to type in a web address must be rated 17+. If your app limits what is viewable through a web browser it may retain a 4+ (or an other) rating.
