Notify keeps an eye on your Gmail inbox

I, like many people, am constantly checking my email. No matter where I am, I'm either getting messages pushed to my iPhone or Mail is checking for new ones every minute. A new app is promising to make using Gmail and checking for messages much, much easier.

Notify, a new free application by Vibealicious Apps, puts a small button in your menubar of your Mac that keeps track of unread messages. The app, which was released less than 24 hours ago has already received over 3200 downloads and is quickly making a name for itself. Notify's developers consider it "like a menubar app, but better" explaining that the application boasts a much better user interface and much more functionality than traditionally found in menubar apps and buttons.

The application has a lot of cool features including:
  • Support for multiple accounts
  • Tabbed interface
  • Growl integration
  • Sleek, simple UI
The developer promises that Notify will continue to evolve, adding that the next major release of the app will support any IMAP email client as opposed to just Gmail. They're also working on support for Google Apps, in-app replies and the ability to create and send new messages directly from your menubar.

The app is also promised to be "freeware forever", according to the developer's twitter.

Seems like a nice app from the reviews, really sad that the developer has a message about receiving too many emails and that they read all of them but cannot respond.

Why not just use Gmail Notifier that is made by Google? I've had it for years and it works perfectly.

I really liked this app, but since it updated it has been crashing-- won't even run at this point. I tried reinstalling but it still isn't working. Too bad.

Delete your preferences file - It's in /Users//Library/Preferences/com.Vibealicious.Notify.plist

Hope this works!

didn't work for me. what's even weirder is that it notified me of email from a different gmail account logged in with safari and ignored my login credentials i entered in the notify preferences. something funky is happening with this app and safari.

Doesn't support Google Domains -- Poor show.

Doesn't provide support for IMAP Idle so in essence it is a boring old "check mail every x minutes" notifier -- there are hundreds of them.

I never found a notifier that handles multiple accounts AND switch accounts when I click "Go to inbox". Same here, when I click the "Open Gmail", it just loads gmail.com without switching logged user if needed.

MailPlane does that fairly well. It tells you which of your multiple GMail accounts has mail (and how many) and all you have to do is double-click the appropriate account; it pulls it up immediately. Quite frankly, MailPlane is an awesome program that puts Notify in proper prespective--that is, Notify is free and doesn't have the feature set that MailPlane (not free) does. The only thing I'd like to see changed in MailPlane is a nicer looking menu bar icon. I'm so tired of the greyscale (monochrome) icons that developers throw at us. Can't they at least offer us a color alternative?

Much better than Googles Notifier, but has the same problem - it doesn't see messages that are filtered in subfolders. It checks only inbox.
I make my gmail "archive" everything according to nature of mail in different subfolders (tags). So far i haven;t found any notifier which would see also those emails. So i just keep manually opening Gmail every 5 minutes to see whats new :)

You could also use MailPlane (not free). It gives you all this info AND actually lets you send and receive mail, drag and drop pictures, etc.
