Facebook 3.0 for iPhone released

After a couple of weeks of waiting in the iTunes app store approval queue, the 3rd major update of the popular Facebook for iPhone [iTunes Link] application has been released. Joe Hewitt, the developer of the app, has been working on it for quite some time and submitted it for review on 8/16. If you're still seeing 2.5 in the app store, Joe suggests deleting the app from your phone and reinstalling it -- it will be 3.0.

The new version includes some of the most requested features including:
  • Better news feed with direct links to comments
  • Ability to "Like" posts
  • RSVP to events
  • Create/upload photos to albums
  • Write/edit notes
  • Customizable home screen
  • Improved photo viewing with zoom
  • Better notifications
Hewitt is already working on the next release, version 3.1, which is rumored to focus on adding Push Notifications.

Check out some shots of the app in action:

Downloaded it yesterday and it worked great. Very slick interface. Tried it this morning and it kept crashing.......BUT....checked the app store and saw that they already uploaded version 3.01 which solved the problem. No more crashing.

Am I the only one that only used the "Live Feed" option in the last version? I liked being able to see all updates of all kinds from my friends instead of just status updates. Since facebook.com seemed to have gotten rid of that, it was my only way of seeing all updates in one place. Helped me find other friends I'd forgotten about.

One thing that has confused me is that when new updates appear in the Apple Store, the release date is often months ago. For instance, I checked the App Store just now, and this new Facebook 3.0, which supposedly just came out yesterday (August 27), has a date of July 10, 2009.

I check the App Store fairly frequently, but it seems that the dates on all app updates are incorrect. Another example is the Yahoo Messenger app - I saw a new update for that app just now, but it had a date of March 2009.

The only thing I DON'T like:

is that when you go to a persons profile/page, their status isn't at the top with their name! Instead you would have to scroll through their wall to find their latest status update.

Think they'll update that?

I cannot install this on my iPod touch! It foes to installing and then gets stuck! If I reboot my iPod touch, the icon vanishes. But if I go back to the app store, it says already installed! What to do?

I didn't have the update queued for me.
I had the old version installed but I searched 3.0 in the store and found it. Installed it and it just updated on top of the old version.

Is there a way to add status updates to the home screen? I don't like having to go to News Feed and then select 'status updates'. Same goes for photos. I like being able to click to see my own, but it would be nice to be able to go to my friends photos as easily
