With the iPhone 3.1 update little things mean a lot
Sometimes it's the smallest thing in a software update that means the most to some users. This latest iPhone update contains a few little gems that should not be lost in all the excitement over new iPod hardware. One of the nicest additions is the ability to remotely lock your iPhone if you're a MobileMe subscriber. It could be very helpful if you've left it somewhere and are not sure where, or you know it's stolen but don't want to wipe all your content in case the phone is quickly recovered. This doesn't replace the very welcome remote wipe feature, but it is a nice add-on.
The place to activate the remote lock is on your MobileMe settings page, which you can access from a web browser. You can give a four digit code, and if your phone is turned on it will immediately lock. You will also get a confirmation e-mail from Apple.
One item to note, once you have done this, it is not a one-time thing. When you get your phone back and you unlock it, it will lock up again when your auto-lock activates unless you turn the feature off in your iPhone settings. I tested the remote lock function, and it worked as advertised.
Another worthwhile addition in the iPhone 3.1 software is the ability, finally, to use Bluetooth voice commands with a Bluetooth headset. This feature should have been included in the iPhone 3.0 software, but I am glad to see Apple address this obvious shortcoming,
With my Jabra Bluetooth headset I could initiate a voice call without any problem. I also asked the phone what song is playing and got the correct answer, but the voice responded through the phone and not the headset. No big thing.
It's nice to see Apple cleaning up some of these little issues as the iPhone moves forward. Wonder where it will be in a year?

The 3.1 update has resulted in a number of bugs with Voice Control and with Bluetooth.
If you have the iPhone plugged into the car stereo, before you could press voice command and it would use the microphone and built-in speaker for prompts. Now there is no voice prompt or acknowledgement (or warning that it mistook asking to play playlist soft rock for a command to call someone you dated 4 years ago and didn't know her number was still in your phone book).
When you placed a call and didn't have your bluetooth on, it used to use your car speakers as a hands-free, now it uses the iphone.
It also drops the connection to the bluetooth often.
Sadly, the POS voice control STILL dose not use the phonetic fields (or nick names) and is pretty dam brainless for anything more complex the Joe Smith.

I have a Philips SHB6100, and previously it would work for calls, but a2dp didn't work (even in iPhone 3.0) - it would only do phone calls.
I tried it just now and stereo works for the first time.
Well... almost. The play/pause works, volume controls work, but track prev/next do not. I can live with that.
But what's most odd is that as soon as the display turns off, bluetooth cuts out, and I get about 0.25s of music every 5 or 6 seconds. As soon as I press a hardware button, and the screen comes back, it carries on playing normally. It's extremely strange.
Steve.
Skipping songs via bluetooth A2DP enabled headphones has always been an omitted feature since 3.0. The iPhone only supports a crippled version of AVRCP such as Play & Pause, but not Track Forward/Back or Volume Control. However, the volume controls on the headset itself will work. As far as the skipping audio that occurs when the screen goes off thats a bug that some users experience more so than others. I still experience it every now and again, but I just hit pause then play again and it usually fixes it. I have used the Jabra 530s for phone calls, although it is A2DP enabled. I use a Motorkr S7-HD and a Jabra Halo. The Halo has better audio hands down.

September 10 2009 at 1:11 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm still waiting for Apple to fix the dithering/compression problem on images you upload to the iPhone. I just can't believe that a company so devoted to audio visual perfection, on a multimedia phone, dithers or compresses every picture besides the wallpapers that came with the phone. The only way to get a decent wallpaper is to make one at 960x640, transfer it via Safari, and scale it down so that the JPEG compression that Safari adds is unnoticeable. They changed iTunes enough, all they would have to do is remove a step before uploading the picture.

Quite the opposite in fact for me. Since moving to 3.1 on my 3G, it's near-instant. During start-up & shut-down, I have seen HUGE improvements (Not that it was unusable before under 3.0, but it definitely slowed down since 2.2.x), The first time I go into Spotlight after turning on the phone is still a bit slow, but nothing to get too worried about. Even though it's kind of a non-event for me, MMS will be nice to have when it comes on the 25th - My last phone, (a Motorola V551) shipped w/o a data plan so MMS or SMS was insanely expensive to do.
Overall, I'm extremely pleased with how the upgrade has gone.
Is voice calling still limited to the 3GS?
