AT&T & MMS: So close, some of us can taste it
Well, it looks like they were telling the truth, for once. Last weekend, a friend of mine just happened to forget that my iPhone couldn't receive MMS messages, and sent me a picture he had taken. So needless to say, I was surprised when I saw the MMS notification, complete with picture, show up on my phone.I was fully prepared to hop on to TUAW and write up a post, letting everyone know that MMS was turned on a full three weeks ahead of schedule. To be on the safe side, I decided to check with others to see if MMS was working for them. Unfortunately, everyone I asked said MMS was still not working on their phones.
Here at TUAW, we have received several tips over the past few months from individuals who have indicated MMS had suddenly started working for them. Many of these were from people who had also installed an updated carrier settings profile to their phones, which has produced mixed results across the board, ranging from MMS actually working to accidentally removing Visual Voicemail and even the basic ability to make phone calls. Even with these profiles installed, however, most people were still unable to use MMS due to settings on their AT&T account which prevent iPhones from sending media messages and filter incoming messages through their web-based "Multimedia Messaging" platform.
For the record, I was running the iPhone 3.0 software, and I had previously modified my carrier settings, although that hadn't really made much of a difference until now. I had been lucky, in that I had found a profile that did not break anything, and had even temporarily enabled tethering on my phone, which I successfully used for about five minutes to try it out (although when I later tried to use the tethering during a recent power outage, the option mysteriously disappeared from the settings panel after I turned it on). So I had to draw the conclusion that my newfound ability to send and receive MMS messages was probably related to the carrier settings I had previously tinkered with, and I was doubtful that it would last.
Now here we are a week later, and MMS is still working for me. But what's even better: reports are flowing in from around the country that MMS has started working in different markets. There are still quite a number of people out there that don't have it yet, but it looks like AT&T is actually serious about meeting the September 25th deadline. Yeah, it's definitely not "later this summer" as promised, but at least we are finally seeing some progress instead of just vapor dates and promises.
For those who are wondering where MMS has landed, HowardForums has a thread running with many people reporting which locations are up and running. Also, it's worth mentioning that the majority of users who have reported MMS as working have the "AT&T 5.0" carrier profile installed, which is included as part of the iPhone 3.1 update. So be sure to update if you haven't already!
Thanks to everyone who has sent tips in regarding MMS in their area.

Works for me :)
Atlanta, OS 3.1, And I manually tinkered with my carrier file when 3.0 came out. I also still have working tethering.

Anyone have a link to the ipcc of the AT&T 5.0 carrier profile? Don't want to update to 3.1 yet as it breaks the jailbreak.

You also don't want to upgrade because it breaks . . . phones.
My phone crashes and has to be reset several times a week. Apple is quietly replacing these handsets.

I still don't understand why I should give a crap about MMS. Pay way too much to transfer data that I can send just as easily and infinitely cheaper via email. WTF?

Unless every friend you have has the ability to send an e-mail from their phone, or upload it to facebook or another site, this is still a much needed feature.

No extra charge for MMS...

Dogzilla... What you're saying SEEMS to make sense, and yeah, if you're the one originating the message, then e-mail is best.
But if a friend sends you an MMS, someone who doesn't know you're on an iPhone on AT&T which can't recieve an MMS, you get stuck with a message saying you need to go to a website and enter a code and a number to see the MMS message... Annoying! The frustration was even WORSE before the iPhone added copy and paste, because the code/number combo was almost impossible to remember.
The ability to RECEIVE an MMS is important, even if you never send one.

Is there anyway to update the carrier settings file without using the hacked one that is available? Or is MMS just randomly showing up to people running a non-jailbroken iPhone.
Just a little confused since I have been reading forums and I thought the only way MMS was working was through the hacked .ipcc file. If it is I'll just wait... Used to have a jailbroken iPhone but I ran into all sorts of issues so I decided to keep my 3GS 'virgin'.
Thanks to anyone that replies!

I don't believe so. I just looked into this too for my 3G. I would rather wait another week and get the official version. Seeing as I have gone without needing to send MMS for years I don't think this extra week is going to kill me. :)

The IPCC won't hurt anything, and if it doesn't work, you can just press the reset network settings on the iPhone and it will fix itself.
If you want to do it, I got mine from here: http://www.krillr.com/blog/N72ZCXJH/tutorial-mms-on-iphone-os-31-att
Its not a guarantee it will work, you're account still needs to be "blessed" by AT&T. But they are in the process of doing that already.

You don't need a jailbroken phone. You just need to add these carrier settings. It's really not bad at all.
ConBon said 2:25AM on 9-14-2009
I guess I might give it a try if its easy to roll back any changes...
Does anyone think there is going to be an issue when the real one comes around? Example...will it just overwrite this one?
DJFriar said 1:53AM on 9-14-2009
DFW, Texas here. Mine is working, and once i added the new IPCC, the other two iPhones on my family plan started working as well.
You can download the IPCC from here, along with instructions how to enable it: http://www.krillr.com/blog/N72ZCXJH/tutorial-mms-on-iphone-os-31-att
And my profile shows up as AT&T 5.1. I had also tried to get MMS working back when 3.0 first came out by modifying the IPCC, so I think that is why mine suddenly worked. Its been working since I updated to 3.1 immediately following its availability.
My tethering has been deactivated though. I haven't found a workaround for that yet.
