One step closer, iPhone gets approval in South Korea
It looks like the iPhone is one step closer to being sold in South Korea. Apple has been trying to increase sales of the iPhone in the Asian market and has met some degree of difficulty along the way. After initially showing interest back in December, the South Korean telecommunications regulation board has finally granted Apple permission to sell the iPhone in the South Korean market. The device was approved at a meeting of the board yesterday (September 22, 2009), but while the iPhone can now legally be sold there, Apple has not yet made any official decision as to their plans in the region. Both KT Corp. and SK Telecom, two big players in South Korean cell phone service, have both said they have spoken with Apple and claim they will have the iPhone soon.

I was under the impression that South Korea was CDMA. Does this mean Apple is developing a non-GSM iPhone or am I wrong?
Because this could be potential news for Verizon customers...

Sean, Korea uses both 3G and CDMA network.

Korean market will be the hardest nut to crack in Korea. I've talked with some friends in Korea and they most likely told me they are not willing to buy iPhone. For the MP3 market, most Koreans use their domestic brands so iPod does have much market share. For cell phone, they mostly use their domestic brands like Samsung and LG. Mostly recently, Nokia launched a model in Korea and the selling ratio was catastrophic.
A general trait of Koreans is that they are very patriotic so they are likely to buy domestic brands.

Ok, I took a millisecond to check your name. Seems you might know what you're talking about. But my Korean friends have iPhones. I actually have a Samsung slider (which is a companion to my iPod touch) and was summarily mocked.
You're right about the patriotism, but let's not take that to the level of insanity. It's one this to cheer for the Reds. Its another thing to keep an Altair lying around cuz you like fat guys with big glasses.

I think that the Korean market has been highly protected. Koreans are also very status conscious and gadget crazy. They like their high end Hyundai, but will line up to buy Lexuses, Mercedes, and Infinitis. The right strategy is to make it a luxury item -I predict white will sell very well along with an entirely matte silver one.
