New, redesigned iMac models could be coming shortly
As we reported last week, Apple seems to be working on refreshing the iMac, by redesigning it and possibly adding some new professional "features" (maybe related to audio) at the same time. Now, AppleInsider is reporting that these new iMacs will be released shortly. They point to some probable signs, including Apple's education sales teams offering discounts on current iMac models to education customers. It's expected that the new models will take design cues from the Apple LED Cinema Display, introduced last October, which features a thinner and more consistently-sized profile than the current iMac design.
Finally, these new iMac models could be released anytime from next week to mid-October, around the same time Apple introduced the Unibody MacBook and MacBook Pro models last year.

Last I checked, there weren't any slot-loading Blu-ray drives. Also, Blu-ray players are meant to be hooked up to an HDTV. I don't see the benefit if they are connected to an iMac.
EDIT: Newegg shows that Sony is manufacturing slot-loading Blu-ray drives for $270, so with Apple's crazy markup pricing, it'll probably be a $400 option. At that point, go buy a slim PS3 and save us all the trouble. There's no point in adding it if it costs an arm and a leg.

24" iMacs have greater than 1080p resolution screens.

I'd like to see more on the CPU front. Since Intel just announced Core i7 Ms maybe we'll get one of those in an iMac?
Would have to dump the G9400M though if they go that route. Having a GT 120 for the low end and offer the 4850HD for the upper end maybe?

The PS3 has had a slot loading Blu-ray drive since 2006. Movies arent the only reason to have a Blu-ray drive. You can store 50+ GB of data on a single disk!

50Gig, wow, that's so great. Now I only need 20 of them to back up hard drive, which will take how long, 10 hours or more, maybe double?
Oh and then I can look forward to them corrupting my data in what, less than 5 years?
and how much will all this cost me, just to back up a 1TB hard drive, oh of course, 3 x times as much for the Blu-Ray drive than a 1TB drive and then how much per disc and I need 20 of them... what nearly as much as a 1TB hard drive again.
Wow, may as well just buy another 1TB drive and copy it over in less time, for less money, with more data security
/end sarcasm

Oh yes, USB 3.0. But now I'm just asking for too much.
Blu-ray would probably be likely but I'm not holding out for that.

Actually, the appeal of Blu-Ray for many would be for backing up data and archiving HD camera footage, as well as burning whole seasons of shows onto one disc, on and on...
It will come eventually. There are lots of good uses beyond "watching movies", which is actually one of the least appealing uses on a computer in my opinion.

I wonder if that means glossy screen? I'm about due for a new iMac so I'm not sure whether to try and find a discount on the current model or wait but then maybe not like the new model. Decisions.

There is definitely an untapped market for matte finish displays.
Hendricus said 4:09PM on 9-24-2009
Well we will see. It must be a radical upgrade before I upgrade my iMac 2008 to the new model.
Possible things we could see?
USB 3.0
Faster CPU
Flatter housing
LED display
A better closure for LED display. (The current models have the "flaw" that the airflow is going over the display. Which results in Dust)
The display can be taken of the stand.
Battery inside.
Touch screen.

Or it could just be another rumor, it's getting old having to lug these grains of salt where ever I go.

The only way they'd get me interested is by going back to one of the previous designs. The current models are hideous IMO (black and silver looks ridiculous and far worse than it would if it was all silver) and are a huge step backwards from the white one and the G4 model.

Oh come on, the G4 flower pots look silly these days and the white iMacs didn't age too well either. I would not expect anything more than CPU bumps, a complete physical overhaul without a major event scheduled to announce it is unlikely.

!@#$%#$%$* I JUST bought a new iMac 24in. Sigh not that I had a choice my quad G5 bit the dust.

Hoping for:
- LED backlit screen
- Backlit keyboard with black keys (wired and wireless)
- 2.1 speakers like the LED Cinema Display
- Discrete video on all models
- $100-$200 cheaper than current prices

How about Core i7 (or at least i5) processors? In the Mac Mini?

@ Joanna D: i would say the silver and black models are far more 'clean' and stylish than the White models, which I thought always had a 'clunky' look to them.
What do I want to see? Apple give blu-ray drive option to this new iMac, plus make it an option on mac pro, MacBook pro and mac mini. Oh yes, and an iMac touch. Now that would be awesome.

iMac is so 80's. I would rather have a tower or something with a matte screen.

My wish list for an iMac to replace my Summer '07 model :
Blu-Ray Read/Write/Movies (and iTunes Support)
Quad Core Processors
Discrete improved performance video card
Wireless Keyboard with number pad
New Wireless Mouse (Can't stand the current Apple Mouse)
Additional USB Ports (wish I had more)

2TB Hard Drive Option

Never really considered buying an iMac, but here's my pick of the suggestions already;
-Faster CPUs (Core i5, with i7 at high end)
-Better discreet and dedicated graphics (ATI 4850)
-LED backlit display
-2.1 speakers
-2 More USB ports (don't think we'll see USB 3.0 this time around)
-SD card slot
-Smaller chin!
Regarding BluRay, not gonna see it this time around. If Macs d ever get it, it will debut in the Mac Pro I think.
