Obviously, I knew about some of the limitations, but I bought the phone anyway. Over time, the limitations bugged me and I jailbroke my phone.
My phone remains jailbroken and for right now I am not upgrading the OS. My complaint is with an overly restrictive policy on the use of my phone. I don't want it to fly, I don't want to flush it down a toilet, but I would like to have some functionality that is possible, proven, and easy enough to implement without jailbreaking. Anyway, being locked in for 2 years on contract I would like a company to address some easily correctable limitations of their OS and that is not unreasonable.

Out of 85,000 apps, Is there an app that duplicates the functionality of WInterboard, Stacks, SBSettings, Backgrounder, IntelliScreen, Action Menu, or MyWi? Yeah, thought so.

Oh, it sounds like you are looking for something to brick your phone. Just stick it down the garage disposal, same result.

Bottom line - I bought the phone, I should be able to run the software I want. Apple wants to "protect" us from ourselves, but seriously, let me decide what I'm willing to do with my phone.
It's silly I have to jailbreak to run applications that are part and parcel of other mobile operating systems - WM, Android, WebOS and Maemo . On my previous WM phone, I would routinely try out new ROM's. Third party developers could completely redesign the user interface - SPB Mobile Shell, HTC Touch FLO.
On the iPhone, I have to soft-reset the darn thing to even free up memory and I can't even put a picture of my kids on the springboard - come on even the most starry eyed Apple devotee has to admit that's absurd.
The phone is nice and the support for games is excellent, and because of the lockdown on functionality the general public isn't likely to have to reinstall the OS, but on the flip side, Apple isn't winning any points with their arbitrary app "approval" process, basic functionality and customization options are only available via jailbreaking, and a lot of talented developers are going to devote their efforts to an OS that is more receptive to their efforts.
I've had a MacBook since they started putting intel processors in them, and I have been happy with Apple's philosophy toward OS X - however, this paternalistic philosophy toward the iPhone is really grating. I feel like I own the world's greatest smart phone for "dummies".

are you saying you bought the phone knowing it wouldn't do what you wanted it to and then felt very angry that it wouldn't do what you wanted it to do, but also object to doing the thing that will make it do what you want it to do?

There is an AppStore search engine to help find all these apps:

That is a nice site, I like the searches, filters and showing reviews.
The site I usually go to is http://www.appshopper.com/, it does more of the rest with, updates, price changes and top 100.

I want my car to fricking fly. How come the only options I can get with it are leather seats and air conditioning? TOYOTA!!!! End your closed, totalitarian system of having to approve everything that interacts with your product. It's my car! If I want to buy it with fricking pinwheels attached to the side so I can drive it off a cliff and fly, you should let me! Monopoly! The death of innovation! Boo! Boo! Mooooooo!!!

Are they counting re-downloads, or downloads caused by app updates? (I bet they are)

To the tell the truth, there are a ton of apps I'll never see, hear about, or use. It's cool that there are niche markets like for lawyers and doctors in the app store.
But I do wish that Apple and AT&T were a little more lienent with their approval policy. As long as the app works, doesn't crash, and doesn't spread viruses or steal data I say let it play. Slowing down the network is an issue AT&T needs to work out and fix.

Not high at all. I consider myself to be a conservative app downloader and I have a little over 100 apps...
