Vonage releases VOIP app for iPhone
Vonage [iTunes link] today posted an app enabling cheap international calls using either Wi-Fi or the cellular network. Vonage Mobile for iPhone is free, but requires you set up an account with Vonage, even if you already have an account for your home or work phones. Users can use their existing mobile numbers, contacts and device interface to place the calls. Just use your existing contact list and click and dial – no extra steps. Users also receive real-time balance updates to ensure they always make the calls they want. The app utilizes your existing cell phone number so people recognize who is calling.
The app supports:
- Lower international rates than traditional carriers
- Lets you use your existing contact list without taking extra steps
- Uses your existing cell phone number
There have been a lot of negative comments on this app from people who are already Vonage customers and were looking for integration of this app into their existing accounts, but there is no cross-over between the two.

October 06 2009 at 6:48 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAnyone who gets a vonage acct has no clue of what they're really getting themselves into. They should rename the company crabtrap, as that's precisely what it is. I had two vonage accts for years - one for biz and one for home/travel use when we are back and forth to Europe. When i no longer needed their service and TRIED to cancel, they absolutely REFUSED to cancel it and shut off my service. I ended up screaming and cursing out their Indian or Asian csr, after they went robotic on me and just kept saying they'd give me 2 free months over and over and over again. I told her I was just going to turn off my credit card from the bank so they could no longer try to charge me (which is exactly what I ended up having to do). She then proceeded to tell me they'd report me on my credit if I turned off my card, at which point I really went off on them and hung up! They of course never reported me, but just the thought of all the bullshit I wouldve had to go through had they, just to undo a corrupt companies illegal practices. DO NOT fucking sign up for anything with these assholes, b/c like a crabtrap (or the mob), once you're in, there's no getting out!

October 06 2009 at 10:54 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMarc, do a search here on tuaw for the last vonage post and you'll find dozens of others saying the same exact thing! Too bad the US is also too corrupt to deal with situations and businesses like this, as in Europe, we have agencies in each country that deal with them harshly and put a stop to it immediately in most cases. Apple found this out recently when they had their iPhone commercials yanked in France for being publicly deceptive in regards to the actual speeds of the iPhone. Run away from vonage, run far away!

It's probably caused by the damp air in mom's basement.

October 05 2009 at 10:36 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis works over the cell network? My recent experiences using an AT&T USB Mercury Connect led me to believe that AT&T deliberately drop your connection when they notice you using Skype, do they play these games with the iPhone's data connection too? Are they singling out Skype for special treatment, or will Vonage usage have mysterious disconnects?
October 05 2009 at 10:01 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replycompletely worthless to me. I make no international calls.

October 05 2009 at 9:18 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replywhy using this rather than google voice? no reason, really
October 05 2009 at 8:53 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo when can I get a Google Voice app?!?
October 05 2009 at 8:51 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPro Tip:
The Vonage app appears to let you use a google voice number (any number?) instead of your iPhone number.
Just enter it instead, and make sure your settings have call screening disabled so that you can enter your PIN before the automated system gives up on you.
