Foxconn building the fabled Apple tablet for Q1 2010 release?
Digitimes is reporting that Taiwan-based Foxconn, a manufacturer that has worked with Apple on a number of projects in the past, has been tapped to build the rumored Apple tablet device for a release in the first quarter of 2010.The initial production run of the tablet is expected to be 300,000 to 400,000 devices, and no estimated price for the device has been released.
The post notes that the focus of the device is to be an ebook reader with exceptional battery life, fast Internet connectivity, and an easy-to-use interface. This information is in line with recent reports that Apple has been approaching publishers about reproducing their content on the device.
This rumor reflects other recent reports that the tablet will have a 10.6" (some reports say 10.7") display, and there is speculation that the display would come from Foxconn's Innolux Display subsidiary. For the first time, the report notes that other manufacturers are not going to leave Apple any breathing room in this market, as HP and others are planning on releasing their own touchscreen tablets by the second quarter of 2010.

" The iPhone instantly turns on"
Umm, no it doesn't. Depending on what you install it can take over 30 seconds...sorry.
yeah, my window 7 PC boots up faster than my iphone, and it is full of software, and cablecard tuners.
Of course it is a 3.6GHz Quad-core system with a 6 drive raid array so....
Anyone ever thought that Apple might just not sell this at the "Apple Tax" range of $699 or so? What if we see something in the range of $199 to $299? The only reason why I say this is because PA Semi is in house, and they might not just manufacture chips...Cheap printable AMOLED screens anyone? --xobmo

Add a bluetooth headset and a bluetooth keyboard and you've got something easily worth twice the cost of a netbook.

October 08 2009 at 3:14 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyA 10 inch form factor is too large for a phone. The main drawcard is touch gestures but that does not allow for precision as your finger will obscure the work. Everything else it will be fantastic for. Games, Browser, email, ebook reader etc. The elephant in the room though... is whether or not it will be a closed device that will only run signed apps that Apple allow. It NEEDS to run OS X. Anything less will DOOM it to failure.
October 07 2009 at 8:54 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAll the best software is now being developed for the iPhone, not Max OS X. There are relatively few independent software developers writing anything new for OS X. The reason is the App Store, and the success of the App Store depends on code signing.
please tell me that no one actually believes that the picture at the beginning of the article is even slightly realistic. Mac OS X would not be suitable for touchscreen use.
October 07 2009 at 7:49 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIf you don't see the possibilities of such a device (and you want to step out of the cave so to speak) go to insanelymac or axiotron or try a Win 7 tablet. No doubt Apple will add their polish by tweaking/developing OS X for such a device, and it will be revolutionary. I've used the examples mentioned above, and while OS X still has a little ways to go on Ink (compared to Windows 7), it's not too far off. Combine that with the speech improvements in Snow Leopard and a special version of MacSpeech Dictate tweaked for such a device, and you'll wonder how you lived without it.
October 07 2009 at 8:00 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe picture shows Snow Leopard exactly how it is.
You specify differences like improvements with speech recognition. Does this mean that you intend to sit in a public place and talk out loud to your computer?
i won't read for long periods of time on a computer screen, it's too much strain on the eyes. Marketing something as an e-book that doesn't use e-ink (or equivalent) to me isn't an e-book reader - It's supposed to mimic the look of writing on a page, a computer screen does not.
I would love a kindle, but I don't see the savings on the book end to justify it.
i'm willing to bet you read a lot more onscreen than you think you do. read online websites & blogs much?

http://www.iliadreader.co.uk/product.digital_reader_1000s.htm
This thing retails for £600 ($957) and people actually buy these. I actually own (and use everyday) a Sony PRS-505, but would love the iRex or even the Kindle DX, but what I have really really been waiting forâ¦
...is an Apple Tablet.
While I'm not excited about an iPhone-like OS made large on a tablet scale, I am interested in the tablet idea as a general concept. If you view a possible tablet as just another product in the Apple line that's filling a gap that isn't big enough to need filling, I'd agree. I think it's possible though that a device of this sort could serve less as a gap-filler and more as a stepping stone to a more evolutionary/revolutionary set of devices, a transitional product, for a new human-computer interface approach, built off of experiences they've gained with their forays into multi-touch (iphone, trackpad, upcoming rumored mouse, etc.), an approach that moves us away from keyboards and mice and more towards direct interaction haptics devices. I'd be interested in that future, even if it still required a keyboard and mouse occasionally.
October 07 2009 at 6:20 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyand THIS is something that is perfectly Jobsian. it would be a great "legacy product" for him to be working on: something that would herald the next phase of apple as a company. it would be a fitting (hopefully not, but i'll say it) last revolutionary product for the iconic founder to oversee before he retires and turns the reins over to someone else.
October 07 2009 at 7:01 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNot a chance in the world that this will be "just" an Ebook reader..
More like a net book, ebook reader, communication device..Probably a OS somewhere between SL and the IPhone..
There just isn't enough "pent up" demand for a "plain" e-book reader, but, there is tremendous demand for an Apple Net book...
