AT&T activates 3.2 million iPhones in 3Q

Reports of trouble for AT&T's 3G network have done nothing to keep people from the iPhone in the U.S.

The nation's second largest wireless carrier announced third-quarter earnings Thursday morning that were full of iPhone goodness. AT&T (T) activated a record 3.2 million iPhones in 3Q, 40% of which went to people new to the company.

Wireless data was the supporting star of the show. Services such as messaging, Internet access and the like were up 33.6% from 3Q of 2008 to $3.6 billion. Data sales now account for 29.4% of AT&T's wireless revenue.

The company's earnings were relatively flat, having posted a profit of $3.2 billion, or 54 cents a share for 3Q '09 versus $3.23 billion or 55 cents a share for 3Q of '08. AT&T did, however, bring in enough to beat analyst expectations. The street was only looking for earnings of 50 cents a share.

Hear, hear! I've had nothing but good service and fast speeds on 3G with AT&T! I'm so sick of hearing people talk about how bad they think AT&T is and how they assume everyone is in the same boat. Well, we're not. The only reason you never hear about the satisfied experiences is because we have nothing to complain about.

Great news for AT&T! Here's hoping that the good majority of those new users are 100% satisfied with their phones and wireless service - just as my wife and I and all of our fellow iPhone owning friends and coworkers are.

I hate Verizon too. Dropped calls and high prices.

If the iPhone is having such a negative impact on AT&T's network, why do they keep selling and activating so many of them?

Because they couldn't care less about that, they just want your cold electronic cash....

Why? Because 3.2 million customers X $100+ for service = $320,000,000 per month.

Great! Another 3.2 million future frustrated customers who will get lousy customer service, shitty coverage, and be denied the ability to use the tethering feature unless they hack their iPhones. This is such great news!

agreed, especially after those Droid commercials that are bashing the iphone and its "shortfalls." pretty sure VZ shot themselves in the foot to ever be able to work with Apple on a device.

keep waiting for that day........ Big Red is gonna take on Android and WebOS to combat the iPhone. I guarantee they have no intention of snagging the iPhone. Sorry to smash your dreams!

I am constantly disappointed with the idea of Apple being linked with a company like ATT. I hate them with a passion.
