The App Store unofficially breaks 100,000 approved apps
It's another milestone (unofficially) met, as Apple has passed the 100,000 threshold of approved apps in the App Store, according to App Shopper. If you're unfamiliar with App Shopper, they list all of the apps that are in the store, tracking updates and price changes. As of this writing, they're listing 101,847 apps approved for sale and 93,118 actually available. We imagine Apple will make an announcement when the latter number officially hits 100,000.Just last month, Apple announced that there were upwards of 85,000 apps available for purchase with sales figures in the billions -- 2 billion apps sold in fact, though there's no word on the mix of paid vs. free.
Despite the (often significant) bumps in the road, the App Store continues to grow at an incredible pace.

Funny, loaded up iTunes and I got 392 apps on that search keyword.
Still, that's quite a bit, granted of the 100K apps, 50% of them are likely context changes to the same base app (i.e. theme, songs, message generators, travelto apps, etc...). And that's the misleading thing when you advertise volume of apps:
For instance, MoLinker, Inc has **9 pages** of the same app with different content! It's the same base app (travelto), but one for Florida, one for Boston, etc... basically different content. IMO I would no call them separate apps. BUT to the appstore, it's counted as 1755+ apps or almost 2% of the appstore!
Then there's the copy public info and charge 9.99 apps: e.g. Dictionary apps--there's 9+ pages of those too, most duplicates of .... cough... public information! That's like 5% of the appstore...
It's truly misleading such that volume counts don't say anything about the quality or usefulness of the apps.
Not to ping Apple *hard*, as Android and Palm do the same, but Apple is heavily marketing app count as the #1 metric of how good the store is....
Jordan - You're willing to admit your fake statistic is fake? That's awfully generous of you. Tell you what, how about you prove how many fart apps there are on the iPhone? How about you just do it without making excuses? Go for it, we'll wait.
When you fail to prove that there are 10,000 fart apps on the iPhone, we'll all have a good laugh at your expense and you can go back under your bridge.
As far as how many there actually are, you would have a hard time finding 50 of them just from searching, not that you've ever actually tried. And while 50 is still more apps than almost every other "app store", it's not exactly 10,000, is it?
10,000 fart apps? Just because I'm feeling curious this morning, I decided to search the app store for "fart". I figure, even if NON-fart apps use it in their search description, if the end number is more than, say, 11,000 or so, it'd still be a good rough idea of how close to 1 in 10 fart apps really are.
A short search later and I ended up with 417... which includes all the apps that, woefully are unrelated to farting or fart noises at all. :( In any case, an online conversion calculator (so you can check the results) yields a percentage of 0.417%. So DEFINITELY larger than .01% but just a hair short of 10% (1 in 10).
100k is nice, but i agree with most in saying that having 100k just makes it tough actually get to stuff you want to use. It makes browsing the app store a painful experience in general.

But I still agree..... most (if you want to get technical I suppose you can go with >50%) of the apps on the app store are either CRAP or there are N different versions of the same thing.... how many picture taking apps are there? Do we really need that many apps that, in apple's words, "duplicate functionality"?
I'm a bit disappointed in the amount of junk I have to sift through to find anything useful. It all seems to float to the top and I'm not sure of a good way to find anything truly innovative or cool. I agree with AppleZilla's comments.
The proove is right on your face when you are at Appl store.... Where are the good appls? If they say that 80k or what ever number are true... that prooves apple store have 80k of craps and a few good ones.... How come there is no re-search on great ups? Not games!!! only appls that makes your life easy and productive. I don't use facebook or tweeter. So, that leaves around 20 appls out of 80k that I can find.

You wouldn't be putting out numbers out there without any research to back it up would you? (And would you please learn how to @*&$ing spell). "Games" is just OOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE category. There's also a thing called "Search Store" on the top right. Maybe you could look into that!
October 28 2009 at 1:49 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhere are you guys getting all these numbers? 70,000? 80,000? 100,000? 99%? If you guys are right about the crap, then why aren't all of you consistent? Did you actually do some counting? What proof do any of you have?

October 28 2009 at 8:30 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAnd it is Still impossible to do a proper search and maddeningly difficult to wade through the App Store. I only get apps when I see them reviewed online. I see a good app on a blog and think, 'I didn't even know that existed. It's been out for How Long!?'
Developers are missing out on my dollars because the iTunes store is designed to appeal the simplicity of a 14 year old. You can tell just by browsing what the top songs are at any time.
No, developers are missing out on your dollars because they have this idea that if they make an app, you don't have to KNOW about it, you'll just feel pulled to the app store, type in the name of their app and purchase it.
For every venture, if you are unknown, you're going to need advertising. Whether it's giving bloggers a free copy, or having an app so incredibly amazing that word of mouth advertising works, you've got to make people aware of your existence.
100k Crap and a few good ones! The bigest problem is that WE ARE ALL STUPID to support apple with this greedy behave. They aproove 99% of crap appls to make people think they are big. The problem is that we people one day will say enough of crap and move on to another platform. I thought Apple was about quality and not quantity... Ahhhhh!!!! I know! like any apple products.... only the hardware are quality while the software are crap. That's why I have my mac to look at and while I do all my work on a pc.
October 27 2009 at 9:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBut then those same people scream bloody murder when Apple rejects an app. It can't be had both ways. While I'll agree there are a lot of worthless apps cluttering the app store there is the issue that what I think is worthless someone else just loves and paid money for. Everyone has a different opinion on what is crap or worthless to them. I've written a few very good productivity apps. But I understand that there is a sizable iPhone / iPod Touch population that thinks my apps are worthless. It's not because they are bad apps, it's because a 15 year old kid has no need for my app. I think all twitter, facebook, etc. apps are worthless because I don't participate in those things. But I understand many people do and those apps certainly should be available to those people.
So let the store fill up with apps. Over time Apple with continue to improve iTunes and make the app store better. Hopefully.
