Andy Ihnatko on Verizon Droid "iDon't" ads: baloney (mostly)
Most American television viewers have been treated recently to endless reruns of Verizon's "iDon't" advertisements. These ads attack the iPhone, playing music that's similar to that played in iPhone ads while displaying a series of messages stating such brilliant and cutting phrases as "iDon't have a real keyboard," "iDon't run simultaneous apps," and so on.Mac fan and Chicago Sun-Times writer Andy Ihnatko was apparently as fed up with the ads as most of us here at TUAW, so he took Verizon to task in a Wednesday column. In the column, he takes on Verizon's claims and for the most part finds them lacking or at least overblown. In describing the faults of the ad campaign, Ihnatko says "Its claims about the limitations of the iPhone are baloney (Mostly.)"
Andy has been testing the new Motorola Droid phone for an upcoming review, and he does like the phone -- a lot. But his take on the ad campaign is right on the mark: "Verizon's 'iDon't' is a terrible commercial. It provokes experienced iPhone users like me to get all Tyra Banks on the phone and the Android 2.0 OS. That can't possibly be good for business."
Don't mess with us iPhone fans, Verizon...

Personally I like the ads and hope that they will push Apple to opening up the platform (probably not), and push at&t to improving their network (possibly).

When you see a Get a Mac ad you know that the ad is for Mac, and Apple even points out features of the Mac OS in most of those ads. On top of that, they are ads that everyone can understand.
The Droid iDont ads are simply horrible. They bash the iPhone without really mentioning features --other than implying them-- and why they think the phone is so great. On top of that they listed a web site on the ad that basically played the ad when you went to it, still never showing the phone. It was a big waste of ad time to me because non iPhone users didn't really understand what it was for and I doubt their marketing approach is to get iPhone users to switch to the Droid.
If that commercial is supposed to be nitpicky, I have no idea what you'd call this guy's column. From where I'm sitting, the Droid is honestly making an effort to give iPhone a run for it's money. It looks to be a damn solid device and where I've held off buying an iPhone for years due to some of its limitations, Droid had me at "Hello". iPhone wins in a lot of ways (style, simplicity, looks) but it's got some pretty big shortcomings and Droid seems designed with the sole intent of succeeding where iPhone fails. I think the commercial is pretty spot on.
November 06 2009 at 12:28 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've got an iPhone 3GS, and I can say for certain iDon't get all of my phone calls, and iDon't get all of my voice mail. There's nothing more irritating to me than switching out the SIM card on my iPhone to the Blackberry Bold I have, and not only getting better call service, but also seeing all the voice mail messages that were never displayed on my iPhone. No doubt some of these issues are with AT&T, but I'm using AT&T on the Bold with much better results, in the same locations. I'll tell you what iDo: iDo get a Droid tomorrow and sever my relationship with the draconian Apple with it's arcane app store approval policies, and sever my relationship with AT&T, the company that would rather spend money suing other companies when they point out the real deficiencies in their network than fixing their network. Buy towers, not lawyers, asshats.

I know people will take that as a PC fanboy or troll comment but I haven't had a PC in 2 yrs since I got a Mac. I only have allegiance to my wallet.
They should append the ads with "iDont have a chance in besting the iPhone"

I can't recall every phrase, but I don't remember anything to be false in what they said. Unless you say jailbreaking negates most of it, but mass market out of the box it's all true.
Motos hardware does look nice as well. IMHO Apple needs to freshen up the hardware looks a bit. I really is practically identical to it's two predecessors.
That said, I think stock Android's UI is crap and I would never give up my (jailbroken) iPhone for it.
Actually he doesn't point out that most are wrong. He agrees the points made in almost all cases, but he also points out that he doesn't agree that the thing stated being is an issue (at least for him).
Most of the points made in the ad are the reason I haven't gotten an iPhone. The lack of multitasking is a total deal breaker. I need the ability to be connected to Skype 24/7, while researching a problem in a browser and connecting to a remote desktop all at the same time. The iPhone simply isn't capable of doing something like that as-is. Its poor battery life is also a real problem. (Co-workers using their iPhones the same way I use my phone have to charge no less than THREE times per day.) The lack of a separate keyboard is also an issue, as when the keyboard is on screen half of the screen is occupied. With its low resolution screen to start with, this makes remote support nearly impossible.
The iPhone has the "cool" factor for now, no doubt, but it certainly lacks a lot of functionality that some people actually need. The Droid addresses some of those issues, so yeah, there are going to be people that care. Andy just isn't one of them.
i find it ironic that a company that cripples all of their phones, so they can nickel and dime customers suddenly starts talking about openness...
November 05 2009 at 12:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell, obviously you haven't been paying attention regarding the whole Android thing, so let me clue you in. Verizon has said - and it's been verified - they're not monkeying with the thing at all. Period. So there's your answer.
FWIW, Apple a decade ago was practically written off by all save for their hardcore fans...and now look where they are. Disney was written off in the 70s and early 80s and look where they are now. It wasn't that long ago that Ford was considered in the can, and yet they just posted their first profit in ages. Companies change.
This post just screams mindless fanboy parroting. The points the idon't ads bring up are real, wether they matter to you or not is a different story, but the points are legit. For the most part I agree with the comment that tiroger left. The one thing I'll add is what I feel is a pretty important one.
Point #4 - âiDonât allow open development.â
Just google the following- site:tuaw.com app store rejection
The 1,640 results returned should tell you exactly why open development is an important.
If anything, true fans of the iPhone should be rejoicing that there's finally some real competition. Imagine what Apple would invent in a world where iPhone-like devices are the standard.
