AT&T looking to sell an 8GB iPhone 3GS?

Boy Genius Report is claiming that two separate sources have told them that AT&T is looking to sell an 8GB iPhone 3GS for $99 US before Christmas. While this news wouldn't come as a shock, it would certainly take more than AT&T to make it happen. As most of you know, Apple doesn't make an 8GB iPhone 3GS and it would probably mean the discontinuation of the iPhone 3G in general.

If you think back to the time of the first generation iPhone (it was so long ago now), you'll probably remember that Apple quickly discontinued the 4GB iPhone after realizing that most people were opting for the larger capacity. Not too long after that, Apple introduced the 16GB version and discounted the price of the 8GB. Now that the iPhones themselves are subsidized by the wireless carrier, the game is a little different.

I doubt that we'll see AT&T discount the 16GB iPhone 3GS to $99 US, even though it would be a huge strategic move before the holiday season, but I have a hard time believing that Apple would be willing to manufacture an 8GB iPhone 3GS. It's one thing for them to continue with the 8GB iPhone 3G because they already have the manufacturing in place, but for Apple to start manufacturing another iPhone 3GS at a capacity less than its current models -- that just seems out of place.

I've found it disappointing that the iPhone (a professional device) has had a smaller capacity than that of its sister, the iPod touch. Currently, the iPod touch is shipping at a top capacity of 64GB and the iPhone only 32GB. Here's the point: if AT&T and Apple could work together and release the 16GB iPhone 3GS at $99 then that could potentially allow for the 32GB at $199 and a 64GB model at $299. That would be a killer plan for the two companies just before the holiday season.

While this may be far-fetched, I don't think it's impossible: Apple did release a bump in storage to the 16GB iPhone in early 2008 without any warning. Here's hoping that they do that again.

In Australia most of my friends and i will be buying outright/already have straight from the apple store. Hopefully the retail price of the 3gs will be the same as the 3g 8gb then ill sell my 3g on ebay and get the 3gs. cant you buy outright in other countries? look at Australia's http://store.apple.com/au/

You know the capacity is due to the chips involved, right? The phone jut doesn't have the room to put 2 32GB drives in there. When you can get 64GB on one drive, you bet the iPhone will have it.

At some point it will be cheaper for Apple to manufacture an 8GB 3GS, increasing volume orders for 3GS components, rather than maintaining a separate set of chip vendor contracts for older components.

If AT&T is hesitant to offer tethering for the iPhone due to the fear of increased traffic how could they handle the traffic generated by an influx of new users buying a cheaper iPhone? I smell a rat.

Just posted the same thing! someone isn't thinking. ATT, lets finish up on past promises before we add yet more trouble regarding the network that still cannot handle it's traffic huh?

I seriously think that the only reason the iPod Touch has a higher capacity than the iPhone is to prove some sort of point to buy the iPod other than the iPhone. Why would you ever buy the iPod Touch for? Of course, you don't want to pay the expensive phone bill and all. But really, what else is the exucuse to go forth and buy the iPod Touch?

Um, you just mentioned THE main reason right there. Not everyone wants/needs the phone features so they're definitely not going to pay a huge monthly fee just to have a one. If you want a phone, get the iPhone. If you don't, get the iPod Touch. I bet even if the iPod Touch capacity was exactly the same as the iPhone they would stil sell loads of Touches.

As has been mentioned here multiple times, the reason the iPod Touch comes in larger capacities is because they don't have the phone components so they have room to add an extra chip to the board.

The situation with the 8GB 3G is bizarrre, certainly here in the UK. While I understand it took a price cut in the US when the 3GS was announced (as you'd expect) here on O2, and even on Orange who have just released the iPhone too, it's still priced exactly as it was more than a year ago.

In October 2008 I bought my iPhone 3G 8B for £99 on a £30pm, 18mth contract from O2. If I was looking for an iPhone right now, in November 2009, I'd almost certainly end up with iPhone 3G 8GB for £99 on a £30pm, 18mth contract, because the cheapest 3GS model is still almost a hundred pounds more, and the price of the 3G hasn't budged an inch. See what's wrong with this picture?

It really does make you stop for a second when you see something like that doesn't it? I got my 8GB 3G about a week after the 3GS came out, and it still cost me almost £350. That's for an out of date, (then) year old model. Apple really do make a killing on their phones, considering a 32GB touch wouldn't have cost me that much for 4 times the capacity.

I think it would also be cheaper, but keep in mind that the 8GB iPod Touch is still a second gen, so when the 8GB iPhone becomes 3GS, then the 8 GB iPod will follow and become third gen.

Of course, all of this will happen. We all know how notorious Apple has become with constantly changing their product lines. Next spring I bet the 64 GB iPhone comes out, as a 3GS, then next October, the iPhone 4G will come out to take advantage of LTE
