Awaken 1.2 for iPhone adds options to alarm clock app

A couple of years ago I used the Mac version of Awaken from Embraceware to get myself out of bed in the morning. It's a well-done app that uses your computer as an alarm clock with lots of programmable options, a tidy full-screen mode and more.

Then I had kids, and Awaken slipped off my radar; the sound of screaming is even more effective (but less customizable) than my favorite podcast. Therefore, I missed Awaken for iPhone and iPod touch. Earlier this week, Embraceware released version 1.2 with a number of improvements, including landscape mode, new "8-bit" and "Classic LCD" display mode (I'm loving the 8-bit), and three new flashlight modes, including a clever CF bulb for the eco-anxious. Shake the phone to turn the flashlight on and off. As is the case for all third-party iPhone alarm clocks, the app needs to be running to activate the alarm (you can use sleep mode to drift off to music).

There's much more to version 1.2 which you can check out here, including some pesky bugs squashed. Awaken for iPhone and iPod touch is available now [iTunes link] for $1.99US. And if that won't get you out of bed, try having some kids.

I simply extracted the Ring and Alarm sounds from my Nokia phone and use these on the iPhone. The Clock app always uses the Nokia Alarm tone for alarms -- it is so loud and ear piercing that it wakes me up along with half a dozen of my neighbors!

I'm using 12:24. It does all this and more.

This seems to be a pretty poor replica of the app I use, TimeTuner. It does support multiple alarm on/off, and has streaming radio built in!

Admittedly, it's still limited by the fact that the app has to be on all night -- come on, Apple!

Almost perfect alarm clock app, with some room for improvement: Individual alarms cannot be turned on/off, and I wish the time of the next alarm was displayed in the clock (like next to the little bell icon). Most importantly, while Awaken's UI brightness can be adjusted, the iPhone's backlight remains untouched, so even a black screen can appear quite bright. There is no official API for the backlight, but there are ways for apps to manipulate it, so I hope Embraceware will look into it.

Individual alarms can be switched on/off. Tap on an alarm in the list and you will see the on/off switch.

I stand corrected. An on/off switch right in the list would be preferable though. Switching from one alarm to another currently takes 6 taps.

I use Awaken on my laptop as an alarm clock, which works well, but have anyone else had the problem where they keyboard shortcuts for snooze etc stop working and the mouse is reluctant to work? It seems to eventually work with a lot of clicking and cmd+tabbing... I seem to have this about every other day, which is very frustating.

That said, it does make me wake up a bit more!

Now that I have removed every other piece of tech in my life and replaced it with my iPhone, does anybody know if AT&T or other will insure it for me, in case I lose it, or accidentally break it while using the Weight Scale app?
