Boxee boxes available in 2010
On the boxee blog this morning, Avner Ronen announced a new and exciting partnership with an undisclosed consumer electronics company that will result in a dedicated device for users who want to use Boxee as a home theater system.They were quick to say that they're still looking to develop Boxee for every possible device connected to your TV... computers, game consoles, set-top boxes, they want to be the media software for your device of choice (like the Apple TV).
However, I have to say that this isn't surprising. It's easier and quicker to develop an awesome application on the hardware of your chosing: any Apple fan knows that. This presents a new dilemma for Mac users who want to see Boxee on their computer or Apple TV -- you can't devote an equal amount of time to development when you add another device into the mix.
That said, Boxee development hasn't exactly been the quickest process to begin with, and the service has been in alpha for quite some time. So, this may be a good way for Boxee to get out of alpha and into something that will show its true potential.

None of the content on Boxee is 1080p or even fills my whole screen. It's all postage stamp sized, grainy, stuttering video. So... pass.
At least AppleTV's SD and HD content looks great on the screen - even if it isn't "true HD" for the elitists. Boxee video just looks like 1998. :P

Has anyone found a good use for boxee beyond (sometimes working) Hulu? The social thing is kinda meh (can't even keep up with the stuff I already want to watch, would probably never get to stuff other people are watching).
The XBMC engine for local content has limited options (vs a full-blown XBMC install), and the other online stuff seems like it's got excellent niche content, but nothing worth a ~200$ box to the general public.
I want to like boxee, but I don't know how. Keeping fingers crossed for a 200$ Hulu Desktop + Plex or XBMC box.

A complete waste of time, unless they’ve hired new programmers who can deliver at less than a glacial pace, and have shifted their focus away from lousy low-res video for HDTVs.

I've tried a few times to like and use Boxee. Just can't.
I thought maybe I was missing something but, based on the other comments, I can breath easier knowing it's just lame.
Happily awaiting AppleTV's deal to overthrow cable programming so I can just watch stuff I actually like and skip the rest.
