Gartner: iPhone has 17.1% of worldwide smartphone sales
iPhone sales are up more than 4% from a year ago, while the leading smartphone seller, Nokia, is down 3% from a year ago. That's the word from Gartner Research today as they survey 3rd quarter sales.According to Gartner research:
Apple's worldwide smartphone share reached 17 per cent as iPhone sales totalled 7 million units in the third quarter of 2009 following the continued rollout of the iPhone 3GS in new countries. Its ASP (average selling price) is holding steady and sales in the fourth quarter should be even stronger as Apple starts selling in China, through one additional carrier in the UK, and in an additional 16 countries.
Sales of Windows smartphones had another quarterly decline, with Windows Mobile 6.5 appearing too late to factor into the accounting.
For a company that was dismissed two years ago for not having any experience in building phones, Apple seems to doing more than just OK. By the same token, the competition from the new Droid from Verizon should keep Apple innovating.

Thats pretty amazing for Apple, But not so great for us it means they are less likely to upgrade the hardware if they dont have to.

Uh.. soooo.. you're thinking the original to the 3G had no upgrade, and the 3G to the 3GS had no upgrade? Word? You wanna read the spec sheets again junior? The iPhone isn't my favorite phone on the block but from 07-09 the only thing NOT upgraded is the screen resolution.

That source CRACKS me up, which is actually 3 years old, not 2. Plus this guy beats up on anyone who loves Apple products AND Apple themselves on a regular basis. And per his own artcile, just to antagonize said fans. Editorial or not, haters don't make good journalists.

Gartner say that Apple sold 4.7 mil iPhones in Q3 2008.
Canalys say that Apple sold 6.9 mil iPhones in Q3 2008.
Apple say that Apple sold 6.9mil iPhones in Q3 2008.
Something tells me that Gartner are clueless.

I think that I read somewhere that Apple has passed Nokia in phone sales profit. Not sure if thats true, simply because Nokia is so massive. Still if it is the case, then its pretty damn impressive. As for the iPhone, I think the drop in price was a big push for all the sales. Obviously Apple is still getting loads of profit from it, and now selling that many more units.
Will be interesting to see how things change now that Android has some respectable phones.
