Whoa! AT&T has had enough of the Verizon slams

AT&T is clearly not going to take it anymore. Today, they blasted back at Verizon for the nasty ads about AT&T coverage.

In a press release today, the communications giant pulled out all the stops:

"AT&T's wireless data coverage reaches 303 million people – or 97% of the U.S. population, where they live and work.

AT&T is the #1 network for smartphones, with twice the number of smartphone customers than Verizon, our closest competitor. Some of the reasons include:

Most popular smartphones. Unlike Verizon, AT&T offers the most popular smartphones in the industry.

More wireless apps. Unlike Verizon, AT&T customers have access to more than 100,000 applications, more than with any other wireless company.

Talk and E-mail at the same time. Unlike Verizon, AT&T's 3G network lets wireless customers simultaneously talk and surf the web or do e-mail.

Fastest 3G in the nation. Unlike Verizon, AT&T has the nation's fastest 3G network."

It's a bold move to respond to someone doing a number on you. Microsoft tried to counter Apple pricing with mixed reviews, and AT&T, unlike Apple, has a lot of unhappy customers. This will be fun to watch, but one wishes AT&T was improving service and features (tethering anyone?) instead of getting into these lawsuits and public mud baths.

There's a meaningless number. Are even 1% of those available for my AT&T-sold Nokia 6555b? NO.

BTW, AT%T has locked up this phone pretty well when it comes to apps I might actually use. Using the camera to stream, etc., requires AT&T to sign the app, because that and almost everything else is locked behind their cert. So if I want to run Qik (a camera streamer) I'm going to have to find an unlocked firmware somewhere. Which won't happen. I also would have to find a firmware if I want to get rid of these crappy trial programs they stuck on here.

Quick, someone say something bad about T-Mobile, so I won't feel sooooo bad about having left them :(

I have a 3G-S. Often when people ask me how I like my iPhone I answer: "It's a great device, and occasionally you can make phone calls on it too."

IOW, ATT's 3G network sucks. My wife never has dropped calls on her original Edge iPhone. I have dropped calls all the time, and connecting calls if and when they happen takes forever.

I hope Verizon keeps embarrassing the Hell out of ATT. Maybe finally they will live up to their promises.

I'm not terribly happy with AT&T, but I've not had a call drop in maybe two years (before my 3g phone, anyway). But my 3g phone isn't an iPhone, it's the one I whine about in a post up above ☝.

You sure it's the network, not the phone?

AT&T refuses to let me file a formal complaint with them regarding my poor 3G service in San Francisco. The AT&T customer service supervisor actually told me "if I want to give us some land in San Francisco, we'll build more towers." I have asked him and several other AT&T reps to help me file a formal complaint about their service, and they have all stonewalled me.

So, please join me in filing complaints with the FCC, so that AT&T cannot go on claiming they don't get many complaints.

Odd, I travel accross 6 states and do not have the network issues others state with ATT. Only times I have issues it would be due to tower location which effects both ATT and Verizon. I travel at times with people who have Verizon and have had equatable service as them. I use around 5000 to 6000 mins in a given month which means my chances for dropped calls would be good. Like I said only time it would is for tower locations in rural areas where both carriers suffer.

I was with Verizon for 8 years and have been with AT&T for 2 years.

I've been tempted time and time again to switch back to Verizon because I do agree that I had (only slightly) less problems with Verizon. However, anyone that's ever been with Verizon knows that they overcharge, they cripple their phones horribly and their early termination fees are outrageous now. So for me, I think I'd stay with AT&T even if Verizon were to get the iPhone too. Besides, judging from all the comments on here of threatening to leave, AT&T's network will be less clogged and less crowded. This mass exodus will also probably cause AT&T to bust their butts to improve their network even faster. And I'll be with happy that I decided to stay with AT&T and not have to pay Verizon's $350 ETF.

So to all you whiners out there: Have a great time switching out of AT&T! Don't let the door hit you on the way out. More network for me!

"... but one wishes AT&T was improving service and features (tethering anyone?) instead of getting into these lawsuits and public mud baths."

And I wish you guys would be focussing on new and better Apple related products, instead of covering lame marketing feuds.

Obviously, you can do both. AT&T probably can, too. So, please, quit these easy and specious arguments whose only function, apparently, is to make you folks appear ever so wise, and others foolish.

I don't see what the problem is when Verizon is doing nothing but telling the truth. Even if you're in the blue coverage area of AT&T the service is lousy. I'm an iPhone user on AT&T and they suck.

I've had AT&T for about 4 years now. Im on the southcoast of mass (45 mins south of Boston). My coverage is great. My speeds are FAANTASTIC. Yes there are gaps here and there were I completely drop out but Rey are usually in a valley or some other strange hilly area. I spend a lot of time all over rhode island (where I work) and it's great there as well. I noticed the service here got really good about 3 months after the release of the 3g. I had a windows smartphone (htc tilt) before my iPhone and the coverage was spootty on the outer hills of newport and other places but since that upgrade around september 08 it's been great. And the speeds are fantastic I've enabled tether with the new blackrain and my speeds are like wowser. I would complain about the dropped calls but I never had them with my other phone and friends without iPhones on AT&T don't experience them so I beilve that's some kinda iPhone needing more power thing or something like that. The dropped calls happen a couple time a week. And now with a-list I'm only usuing 800mins on my family plan.
