Next generation iPhone now in testing phase

Mac Rumors has received word from Pandav, creator of iPhone application iBart [iTunes Link], that they've spotted usage records for the next-generation iPhone.

PinchMedia, the firm that provides analytics for the iBart app, allows Pandav to see what devices its apps are running on. Pandav noticed an identifier for "iPhone3,1" in their logs. The iPhone 3GS hardware identifier is "iPhone2,1", which means the next-generation iPhone is already being tested.

iBart is a guide for San Francisco's train system, which lends further credence to the rumor. The iPhone 3GS was spotted in October of 2008, again by PinchMedia statistics, and was also being used in the San Francisco area.

Based on the past three years of releases and comments by Apple's senior VP of marketing, Phil Schiller, the most likely launch date for the next-generation iPhone (iPhone 3GSS? iPhone 3GX? iPhone 4G?) is either June or July of 2010.

What I really want is a larger iPhone. Something along the lines of the HTC HD2 form factor or even slightly larger. The standard size is ideal for most people but there's definitely a market for this larger form factor as more people use their SmartPhones less for voice and more for apps. A headset solves the size problem. No worries about holding a 4"-5" mini-tablet up to your head. With more space in the enclosure 128GB+ of internal storage is do-able. 4"-5" is a sweet spot I think. Excellent for web browsing, completely viable as an e-book reader, better for multimedia, etc. It would be an ideal device for me.

The advent of large SmartPhones is one of the few things that could make me jump the iPhone ship. When the Android version of the HTC HD2 comes out I'll be very tempted. I'm going to give Apple the benefit of the doubt here and wait until June though. I would prefer to stick with the iPhone but I will look elsewhere if Apple can't provide what I'm looking for. The gap has closed enough that I don't feel tied to the iPhone OS indefinitely.

And in other news, Nintendo is working on the successor to the Wii and DSi, Microsoft is working on the successor to the Xbox360, and Sony is working on the PS4.

This just in, Windows 8 and Mac OS X 10.7 are in development.

There is only one thing that I want in a fourth-generation iPhone, and that is a GSM/CDMA hybrid chip that allows it to run on Verizon's network. Everything else is just gravy to me.

So iBart contains spyware? I don't know if the app has a disclaimer or opt out option, but if it did you would think that someone testing secret Apple hardware would notice.

Well... I'm in my third iPhone (original, 3G and now 3GS).

I'm pretty sure I will end up buying the next version... (as long as Rogers offers a decent upgrade price).

I'm in a similar boat--owned a 1st-gen, 3G, and now a 3GS--but I can't imagine what they'd add that would make me want a 4G. I went from the 1G to the 3G because I wanted the GPS and I went from the 3G to the 3GS because I wanted video recording--which, coincidentally, were #1 and #2 on my list of things missing from the original iPhone. (And because I was able to sell both on eBay for more than I paid for them--thanks, AT&T lock-in! :-) ) I'm sure there are features they could add but I literally can't imagine anything that would make me really want to upgrade. Thermometer? Altimeter? Barometer? Tachometer?
