On the first night of Christmas, my true love game to me - free game apps

The folks at Blacksmithgames have come up with a really nifty idea. They've created an Advent calendar, or in their words, an appventcalendar. Each day from now until Christmas, a new door will open showing an iPhone game app that you can get for free, but only for one day.
Being December 1st, the first door just opened and what's behind it is 33rd Division [iTunes Link] a line-drawing stealth game where the goal is to escort your troops while avoiding enemy patrols. 33rd Division is for any iPhone or iPod touch running OS 2.2.1 or later. Tomorrow its price will go back to US $0.99 and another door will be opened.
Blacksmithgames promises a mix of well known and undiscovered games to keep things interesting. So go on over and pick yourself up a free game. Then keep checking back for new surprises.

looks like the idea of free stuff brought too many visitors for their servers to handle :(

You can follow them on Twitter @blacksmithgames to find out the daily app as well. You don't have to do anything special, if you know the name of the free app, it's free all day on the iTunes store.

It seems all this attention is too much for their servers to handle, right now I'm getting a 404 error on the site :(

Sorry we are moving to a new server right now .... 100.000 Pageviews in 12 hours was too much for the old server

Bravo, love the idea - sorry for probably contributing to your server crash, I sent the link to a lot of friends as well. :-)

Does nobody have any comments on the free app itself? I tried it and found it mildly interesting. Not sure how much replay value it's going to have but it certainly wasted a few minutes on the first play.

If you're like me, and can get OCD about maxing scores and unlocking everything, you'll find good replay in this.
Different enough from any other line-drawing game to stand on its on, and made superb with the hand-drawn graphics, voice acting, and original soundtrack.

Is very similar in concept to Commandos on the PC (borderline plagiarized).

Looks like the free app for Dec. 2nd is TriDefense.
I got an the "this item is being modified" error when I tried to download it... so you might have to wait a little bit to get it.
