WolframAlpha iPhone-formatted web page no longer available

Wolfram|Alpha has discontinued their iPhone-friendly formatted webpage.

The page, which was available at http://wolframalpha.com/iphone, now redirects visitors to http://products.wolframalpha.com/iphone/, which is an information page related to their $50 iPhone app [iTunes Link].

Another page, http://www.wolframalpha.com/addtoyouriphone.html, shows iPhone users how to add the website to their iPhone (hint: just like any other page). Visiting the website in Mobile Safari brings up the image shown here, also suggesting that you buy the iPhone app.

The app gained wide attention when it was first announced due to its price tag, which critics said was far too high. Others rebuffed the criticism by saying that if you didn't want to use the app you could use the iPhone-friendly webpage.

Perhaps too many people did just that.

Thanks to TUAW reader Anil Doshi for the tip.

Update: Since there seems to be some confusion: yes, the regular website can be used once you dismiss the pop-up ad by tapping the "X" shown on the top-right corner of the ad. That seemed obvious to me, but obviously I should not make such assumptions.

and at $50 for an iphone app that i might use occasionally, i would rather assign the research task to a business analyst. well so much for wolfram (his book was naive too.)

The comments from the TUAW readers are getting pretty frustrating. It as if people are not really reading the articles... then commenting on what they think the article is about as opposed to what the article actually is about.

This article is about the iPhone friendly version of the site no longer being available. And it is not. The mobile version is still available... Then asking people to buy a $50 app to get that iPhone friendly version back...

Seems pretty clear to me...

Wasn't the whole point of having a real browser in the iPhone so we didn't NEED "mobile-formatted" sites anymore?

Yes, but the point is that

a) they *made* an iPhone-friendly site

b) then they made a (very expensive, by App Store standards) iPhone app

c) people who complained about the price of the app were told "Well you can still use the iPhone friendly site"

d) they took down the iPhone-friendly site

Seems noteworthy, doesn't it?

Yeah, way to fact-check TUAW. Notice the close box?

Yes, I understand that the website can be used once you dismissed the alert.

I never said that the *website* was not accessible. I said the *iPhone formatted* version was no longer accessible.

The conspicuous "X" was obvious enough that I did not think it needed to be explained closing/dismissing the pop-up.

Just another reason to jailbreak your phone and install UAFaker.

Nevermind, it works, but its not a mobile layout.

TJ, it works great. It has the same popup (as in the article above) but it also has an X -- click the X and you get the search dialog. (from the wolframalpha.com/mobile site only) - Additionally, once you do click on the X and close the "app ad" - it won't come back if you reload the mobile page (cookie maybe).

Despite comments to the contrary, there *are* comments and ratings for the $50 app in the App Store.

People are divided on whether it is worth it.

ok i actually own the app and on one hand is seems pricy for something that you can do for free on the web and it also seems pricy compared to other apps on the app store — but boy is it incredible.. there is still some work to be done but actually having it on your phone wrapped up in a nice fast app is a lot more useful than either the webbed version on my iphone or even the webbed version on my mac. It’s just always there able to answer all sorts of questions and do calculations (i never though id see mathematica in my pocket!!) and comparisons in my pocket.. and as it improves it will be come invaluable

i do think that its in their own interest to lower the price, as 10 times as many people would buy it it it was $20 to $25 not 50

Also there are a few areas of improvement:

1) You need to be able to join previous answers into the calculation you are doing now
2) It needs a bit more information (eg commercial products ( for example userbase of iphone vs userbase of zune, circulation of New York times vs the WSJ, stats on well known people etc.. basically the kind of data thats so useful to business))
3) this kinda linked up to answer one but if somethings a tiny bit too complex it cant do it — even though if you break it down it works. My example was i wanted the volume of a elliptical cylinder made from aluminium .. i can do “density of aluminium” (answer 2.7 g/cm^3 ) and i can get the volume easily enough but it wont answer my question .. i have to multiple the volume (in what eve units) but the 2.7 g/cm^3 to have it work it out…. there seem to be a lot of these where the real power can be fully unlocked yet.. (by the time id sorted it i could have just done the math by hand :-) )

also more minor things — e.g. i think it needs syntax compatibility with mathematic and i also think it needs a much more “exact” syntax to complement the human one e.g. weight(moon) rather than “what’s the weight of the moon” — would be much more useful as the statements get complex

overall though if your in many businesses it will pay for its self in a few days…
