EyeTV now offers HTTP Live Video streaming over 3G via Safari

Tired of restrictions about what you can and cannot stream over 3G connections? Elgato, the makers of EyeTV, have introduced a novel solution for their many customers to access live and recorded TV shows using an iPhone and a 3G connection. Their new Live3G web site provides a web app solution for remote video access.

The website uses HTTP live streaming to deliver high quality video to the iPhone's Mobile Safari app. Powered by the EyeTV 3.3 update (free to existing owners of EyeTV software), this technology avoids App Store hassles while providing on-demand video access to your home TV recordings and live programming.

As an added bonus, since Mobile Safari has access to the iPhone's TV Out capability (third-party apps can't use it, but Apple apps can), you can use a component or composite video-out cable to display your streamed video on any convenient TV.

If you're worried about other people gaining access to your library of "Dora The Explorer" episodes, or to personal videos you have digitized using an EyeTV box like the 250 plus, don't. You must authenticate yourself with your My EyeTV credentials before being granted access to any library.

The EyeTV update and web site are live now.

Does anyone know if this works with the Palm Pre as well? After all, it has the same browser rendering engine.

Here is a short demo I shot of EyeTV Live 3G. My EyeTV Hybrid is connected to my HD DirecTV DVR's output to send the Comedy Channel to my Macbook. I use AT&T's DSL service. 6 Meg download/upload speed is under a meg. The Live 3G works pretty well. It does freeze up from time to time, but not for very long and the freezes can be eliminated by adjusting the bit rate with a slider provided in the software. I watched MSNBC on my iPhones 3G connection for well over an hour on Friday morning while out of town and was amazed at the quality of the picture and the sound. It's not going to be as good as your home tv reception. If you expect that . . . you are expecting to much from this software/hardware package. I think its pretty cool. I have a Elgato eyetv hybrid and upgraded last night to eyetv3.3 software. I bought the eyetv iPhone app awhile back when it first came out thinking I could stream live tv just with it. You must own Eyetv3 software and a compatible device., i.e., eyetv hybrid to use the iphone app and the Live3G Web app. The iphone app seems only to stream with a WiFi connection. It is the Live3G web app which streams with 3G on the iPhone. I'm no tech wiz by any means but I got these apps to work on my local connection, WiFi and this morning while 2 hours away from home on my iPhones 3G connection using the Live3G web app. My eyetv hybrid was connected to an antenna. The reception through the antenna is spotty., but of the channels I watched on my 3G connection the picture was good and the sound excellent. ALSO, the channels that would come in on my home antenna in HD seemed to also be in HD on my iPhone. I'm going to connect the hybrid to my Directv satellite box tonight and see how it works tomorrow morning. The one thing I'm wondering about is how one could change channels on a DirecTV box with the software? I don't think that is possible. But with an antenna and the hybrids built in turner one can easily watch their local channels and/or recordings with the iPhone and these apps. Note, I have owned a Slingbox. The one big disadvantage was not being able to stream using the iPhones 3G connection. That limitation does not exist with this software/hardware package. I do wonder (however) how Elgato gets around AT&T's restrictions concerning streaming television? Maybe someone knows how their doing this and if at some point AT&T will put the brakes on this. Tell then its really cool to watch TV on my iPhone.

You can control an external box by buying an USB IR transceiver and buying and installing iRed (www.tinbert.de). You go through a Tuner Wizard in iRed using the external box's remote. Then in iRed you go to Preferences and choose 'Listen for EyeTV channel changes'.

As long as you have the Tuner and the Service named the same in iRed and EyeTV it will work great. I had this setup for well over a year.

So do you have to have the eyeTV iPhone app, or the eyeTV 3.0 OSX app, or both? I only have the OSX app for now.

I accidentally updated last time when they removed the 3g easter egg and was kicking myself. I can't believe they turned around another 3g solution already, but...

i tried going there on my iphone, and it looks like the old eyetv share site, not like the screenshots of the new web app.....? anyone seeing the new version?

I love my EyeTV. Great product. I use the iPhone app all the time to schedule recordings or listen to ESPN away from the tv.

That last bit about the video out from the iPhone...it's like a portable Slingbox! How awesome!

And this is when AT&T gets scared, institutes tighter bandwidth restrictions.
