Flash beta update, Perian gets a refresh
There were two minor video plug-in related updates last night. First Adobe released a new beta of their Flash Player 10.1 beta 2 (this on the heels of a set of security patches for the stable release version last week). Flash 10.1 is introducing a host of new features, but is primarily aimed at the mobile market. Among the biggest new features in 10.1 will be the ability for developers to create multi-touch aware Flash content for a wide range of devices. Looks like Adobe is still hoping to prove Flash worthy for Apple for use on the iPhone.Along with this beta release Adobe has reminded us that they are abandoning the G3 processor after this upcoming version of Flash. In the release notes [PDF] and in last week's security announcement, Adobe says:
I'm all for moving forward with tech, and G3 are ancient by today's standards anyway. Besides, how many people will this decision actually affect?Note: The Adobe Flash Player 10.1 release, expected in the first half of 2010, will be the last version to support Macintosh PowerPC-based G3 computers. Adobe will be discontinuing support of PowerPC- based G3 computers and will no longer provide security updates after the Flash Player 10.1 release. This unavailability is due to performance enhancements that cannot be supported on the older PowerPC architecture.
In other plugin news, Perian, which we've mentioned several times here on TUAW, has been updated to version 1.2. Perian enables QuickTime support for additional media types, including:
This is Perian's first major update since Snow Leopard has arrived. While there are no big new features, it's always nice to see an update after a big OS upgrade just to know that everything works on the new system.
- AVI, FLV, and MKV file formats
- MS-MPEG4 v1 & v2, DivX, 3ivx, H.264, FLV/Sorenson Spark, FSV1, VP6, H263i, VP3, HuffYUV, FFVHuff, MPEG1 & MPEG2 Video, Fraps, Windows Media Audio v1 & v2, Flash ADPCM, Xiph Vorbis (in Matroska), and MPEG Layer II Audio
- AVI support for: AAC, AC3 Audio, H.264, MPEG4, and VBR MP3
- Subtitle support for SSA/ASS and SRT

The Perian update actually made things worse for me. I don't even get a picture when viewing mkv files :)

December 19 2009 at 12:27 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyConsidering how my poor Powerbook G4 chokes on Flash sites (Hulu, South Park Studios, etc.), it feels like they had given up on G4 some time ago as well...
December 18 2009 at 5:05 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replydidn't even Apple dropped support for G3s long time ago?
December 18 2009 at 12:27 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYou know, a lot of people are complaining about VLC development stopping, but good riddance to that shitty UI. Quicktime is many times more stable and matures, MKV was the one missing link for me.
December 18 2009 at 11:30 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI was having problems watching videos with SRT subtitles in Snow Leopard's Front Row with the last version of Perian, so I had to downgrade to Leopard. Was anyone else having problems? Is this corrected with the new version?
December 18 2009 at 10:56 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAny word on when will Perian be able to open WMV files? I really want to get rid of Flip4Mac.
December 18 2009 at 10:50 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAdobe are using the age of the G3 as an excuse. Why does OS X Leopard run fine on a G3 and Flash not, it's only a web plugin!
December 18 2009 at 9:44 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe G3 doesn't have the vector-coprocessing unit that the G4 has, and that's a feature that Flash benefits from a great deal. Supporting a bunch of special code to handle the features that the G4 handles natively is a hassle, so I can understand why Adobe doesn't want to do it anymore.
December 18 2009 at 1:05 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI wait a long a more SL compatible version of Perian but also this 1.2 has a lot of problem... I've tried 3 mkv files and QT is unable to read the video or the audio stream in 2 of them, and the subtitles are desynchronized...

Well, this will affect the guy who stole my iBook G3 off my front porch while I went inside to take a dump a few months ago.
December 18 2009 at 8:39 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHow did you tell the difference between your iBook G3 and what you went inside to dispose of?
My iBook G3 was a PoS. AppleCare Australia replaced it with a Brand New iBook G4 after it's 3rd Logic Board in 2½ years. The G4 is still going strong as my Niece's educational computer.
