Apple releases firmware update addressing 27" iMac screen issues

We hope this will provide holiday relief for many iMac owners: Apple just released a firmware update for the graphics chipsets in 27" iMac models, intended to fix display issues. Apple states this download
Updates the graphics firmware on ATI Radeon HD 4670 and 4850 graphics cards to address issues that may cause image corruption or display flickering.
This update is only needed for the 27" iMac models introduced in October.

This should hopefully fix the issues that many are facing with their new iMacs, including our own Josh Carr, who's had display issues with his 27" iMac. We'll let you know if this update fixes these issues for him.

This update is available through Software Update, or from Apple's Support Downloads page.

Downloaded, installed, update confirmed: It's still flickering, switching off and vertical flipping. Happens after it's been on for an hour.

I've also found out that I can't install Windows 7 through BootCamp as the screen goes blank due to resolution issues at a crucial stage. Apple have really messed this up haven'y they?

Feh, it hasn't done anything to correct the digital snow on my external display on wake from screen sleep. Harumph.

@Josh Carr, thanks for the squeaked link, now I know mine is a week 46. The bottom half of the screen is _mildly_ more yellow than the top, but not by enough that I can't decide whether it's my brain messing with me. I need to bring in an outside observer and test it blind, I think.

I'm glad this is resolving major issues for the 27in iMac folks, however, being an owner of an older 24in iMac (early '07) and an even older 17in MBP ('06), I have been experiencing graphics issues since upgrading to SL as well. Personally, I think there is more to the problem than the graphics cards delivered in the latest generation iMac...like something inherently awry with the SL core. I hope Apple is continuing its investigations and gets to the bottom of this.

I have an early 2007 24" (the i7 above is it's replacement) and have had no problems since upgrading to SL. Perhaps it's good fortune -- but I also have a strict mantra for OS X upgrades: I *always* Erase and Install, pulling my account (e.g. $HOME) off backup using migration assistant, and then re-installing apps and system-wide settings my hand. This takes a bit longer, but from Panther forward, I have yet to have a notable upgrade issue. As said, it might be dumb luck -- but for now, I'll stick to the plan that's worked to date. :-)

I have a week 50 i7 which has had zero issues (including those outlined at squeaked). I installed the update half-expecting the updater to inform me that it was not needed for my system but it installed anyway. A few games and some general usage and I don't see any difference in performance (e.g. simple frame rate) or other side-effects... Yet.

As an FYI. I gave up and returned my 2nd iMac back to the Apple store today (first had display buzz and screen flickering, second had LCD discoloration). I'm now using my 3rd iMac and I must say, it's a world of difference.

Speculation shows that Apple stopped shipping the iMacs in November to address some pretty major issues in the manufacturing process. I've heard reports that they are shipping again so you should start seeing ETAs soon.

If you've looked at imac.squeaked.com -- I can tell you that I have W89(52) iMac now... 52 being the manufacturing week. It's not a blanket statement, but week 50/51 seems to be the split date. Anything after 50 seems to have a much better chance of being good.

I'd strongly encourage anyone who purchased a 27 inch iMac to check out the site and make sure that you're good. Many times Apple will help you out and exchange it instead of making you sit through the hassle of a repair.

Shout out to the peeps at the Apple store Park Meadows in Lone Tree, CO. You guys rock.

Hope this means they're going to issue a similar update for the MacBook Pros with the same issue.

Oh good - it was getting annoying turning off my secondary display when it woke up to digital noise instead of a picture. This probably won't do anything about the uneven backlight color temperature, but one step at a time.
