Next-gen iPhone to get a 5 megapixel camera?
I'm about due for an upgrade to my first generation iPhone, and a sweet camera would help seal the deal. That's the rumor going around (more or less unrelated to the other set of rumors we heard today, though I probably wouldn't turn down a higher-resolution iPhone with better camera included) according to a few places, which seem to stem from a company named Omnivision Technologies. They're expecting to not only see an increase in production of iPhone CMOS image sensor parts from 20 million to over 40 million in 2010, but they also say they've landed a deal to put together 5-megapixel CIS pieces for a new version of the iPhone.Take this with the requisite grain of salt, of course -- we've expected cameras in some of Apple's devices before, and a few of us were disappointed. But it's not a big stretch to think that if Apple does release a new version of the iPhone as expected this year (be it a normal handheld or a larger tablet product), the camera in there will be able to take nicer video and better pictures than before.

Yeah, howzabout a 5 MP unit with flash on the front and the old 3 MP on the back for video chat...on the iPod Touch so we can Skype on MiFi instead of being stuck with AT&T.

December 24 2009 at 10:22 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo a 2010 iPhone will have a camera with the same resolution as a 2007 Nokia, but without the Zeiss lens or the Xenon flash?
Like others have commented, I too decided to hold on to my iPhone 3G and wait for the 2010 version, which may have as much as 64 GB of memory, from other posts that I've read, if they prove to be correct (even 32 GB in the 3GS is pretty good). I have 16 GB in my 3G and I'm now down to only 3.5 GB left. I hope June/July 2010 comes soon.
As far as the camera is concerned on the 3G/3GS, I was planning on using the iPhone's built-in camera to take pictures for selling stuff on eBay, but I have shaky hands, and w/o image stabilization, I can't take great pictures (not to mention the low light issue). There are some apps in the App Store that I looked at that are supposed to compensate for camera shake, but none of them looked good. And so I decided to spend $180.00 (at the time) for a incredibly small but fantastic point-and-shoot Canon SD780IS, and so that will produce much better pictures for me than even a 5 MP camera on an iPhone could ever produce. True, it is one more thing to carry around, especially if you like taking pictures, but this Canon camera is so small you could fit it into a shirt pocket (size-wise, it's the size of a credit card, albeit with a little more heft).
But it would be nice to get a better camera in the 2010 iPhone come June/July next year. Rather than the upgrade from 3.2 MP to 5.0 MP, I'd rather they add built-in image stabilization to the iPhone.
That's just my 2 cents. :)
A higher pixel in a phone really does not mean anything in and of itself so stop drooling. Why is it that Apple always seems to fall behind or lag in features?
Hell, I would rather have the hearing slit much larger like the HTCs. Also, how about getting a little email icon at the top of the screen without having to unlock the phone just to check for emails? Or maybe a better alert than a little tiny ping noise?
I was a user that was snatched up by the 3GS from my old WinMo phone, and have not been disappointed one bit. I'll be excited for 2011 edition but however they improve with the 4G can only be good for all of us. :-)

*by 'you' I mean 'camera/gadget makers'
*by 'could have' I mean 'did/still does'
I skipped the 3GS and held on to my 3G. I hope to be rewarded richly with nifty features and improvements like this.
Me too... 3GS seemed more like a way to attract new customers and those who never upgraded from the 2G. A 3G to 3GS upgrade just wasn't worth the money.

I know a lot of people will disagree with that statement, but it's probably because they enjoy the touch-focus/exposure and video capabilities. Those are fine capabilities, but don't make the camera 'better.'
When my 2G died (my fault) I purchased a 3G. When the 3GS I purchased one. Later, when my wife's phone died she finally decided to take over my 3G (she's now happy she did). I used to use the camera in my 2G and 3G all the time -- the images weren't super high resolution, or anything, but they were perfect for uploading to blogs and other sites while I was on the road. When I got my 3GS my photography with the iPhone came to a slow crawl.
The 3GS simply can not take photos well in any kind of mid- to low-light situation, which I unfortunately find myself in all the time. The 2G/3G cameras weren't great, but they at least did a decent job. I would say they shoot better pictures in those situations at least twice as good as the 3GS.
I'd happily trade touch-focus/exposure and video capabilities for the opportunity to have the old 3G camera in my 3GS. I now have to carry around a point-and-shoot digital camera for my 'fun' photos along side my DSLR for my 'work' photos. What a pain.
As far as daylight shots go... the 3GS camera is fine.
