Breaking: AT&T website stops selling iPhones in New York City?

What kind of Christmas present is this? The Consumerist is reporting that AT&T has stopped selling the iPhone in the New York metropolitan area, at least via the company's website, due to high data congestion (or possibly due to online fraud). Update: While Consumerist's post still cites 'network congestion' as the reason for the NYC sales hold, we've been told by other customer service reps that the real reason is a spike in fraudulent purchases; other sites have gotten the same story.

Stephen in Brooklyn says he made the discovery while shopping on AT&T's website for an iPhone today:
I was on the AT&T Wireless website trying to get an iPhone. However, when I put in my zip code 11231, the site says the iPhone is unavailable. This seemed a little odd so I started punching in other famous zip codes: 90210, 60609 (spiegel catalog), 02134 (zoom, an old children's show).
For theses cities, LA, Chicago, Boston, iPhone is available. Then I looked up some other zip codes: Dallas, Miami, St. Louis, Philadelphia, San Francisco. All those cities are ok. Then I started putting in more NYC zip codes: midtown, Staten Island, the Bronx...no iPhone available.
This is weird...AT&T has cut off New York City.
Laura Northrup at the Consumerist contacted AT&T Customer Service to check if the lack of iPhone availability in New York City was a website glitch or a planned disruption. The online rep she chatted with confirmed that the phone was indeed not being sold to New Yorkers via the website, although it remains available via the Apple store website and via both Apple and AT&T physical stores. Mashable, BoyGeniusReport, and Gizmodo have also verified with AT&T Customer Support that the iPhone is indeed not available through website order in New York City.

This is sure to piss off thousands of potential customers in NYC. Let's just hope AT&T Media Relations releases a statement clarifying when the ban will be lifted and if it will happen in any other cities. In the meantime, just think of this as more fuel for the fire as to why Verizon should have the iPhone; and of course, NYC iPhone shoppers can continue to pick up iPhones at the Apple Stores or at the AT&T outlets in the city.

Why Always hitting on AT&T, I've had at&t for years travel all over the place and I have no issues. I've read report of tests being done and at&t beets big red in most city's. I understand that and want it to be better and faster. On the same not I'm just happy we are able to do everything we can now. 10 years ago I had a brick on my hit NOKIA 2160 and couoldn't even text message. Not sure if Verizon pays this site but I'm not ready to take info from this site if they are for Verizon or getting paid by verizon. Also my criuse last week at&t worked great at all island and on the ship. OH verizon doesn't have a map for that one now do they!

Is it any more difficult to buy from the Apple website than from AT&Ts? If the iPhone had only ever been sold this way, few would have complained. The experience us far smoother. Plus, there are AT&T retail stores everywhere. How does this change remotely inconvenience anyone?

Relax people, it's not the first time we see it showing up like that for New York. You can still buy it in a store.

Brian G.: Welcome to AT&T online Sales support. How may I assist you with placing your order today?
Gregg: Im trying to order an iPhone online
Brian G.: Which one, the 3gs?
Gregg: Yes
Gregg: It says "There are no phones and devices that match your search criteria."
Brian G.: It is because your ordering zipcode is in New York City.
Gregg: What does that mean?
Brian G.: Due to massive fraud in online ordering, iPhones are not available online only.
Brian G.: They can be bought in stores only.
Gregg: Ok, thank you.

If AT&T 3G congestion is so bad in San Francisco and New York, how are smartphones other than the iPhone behaving?

Have AT&T stopped selling other 3G Smartphones and Data Access Devices too?
How does this affect AT&T's contract with Apple. If people aren't able to buy an iPhone in New York though AT&T, are Apple able to renege on their network exclusivity agreement? What other 3G services are available in NY?

Verizon is out because they're still running old Technology, which isn't compatible with the current iPhone 3G. Sprint are likewise running CDMA and (ha!) WiMAX. Is T-Mobile's data network up to the task?

They can buy the phone in New York. They just have to go into a physical store (AT&T or Apple).

Does everything HAVE to be a conspiracy? Seems we just had some major buying holidays ... wouldn't the simplest answer be that they're just sold out?

Verizon is no angel. I'm amazed at all the AT&T hatred and Verizon love, reminds me of Sony vs. Microsofties in the video game world. They are both great in some ways, wretched in others.

I agree with Jindo, there's a real "grass is greener" aspect to all of this pro-Verizon sentiment. I had Verizon and T-Mobile service before I switched to iPhone, and didn't find either to be particularly better than AT&T when all things are considered. With Verizon, I had multiple billing errors over a six-month period which cost me hours on the phone with 'customer service'. With T-Mobile, I had more dropped calls and dead zones than I've ever had with AT&T. This has become something of a meme, now, though; "AT&T Sucks" is the idea which has been stamped into the wider consciousness. Really, you won't find that grass to be all that much greener when you do sign your life away to Verizon (the company which has just introduced a new early-termination fee of $350).

It would be but under the other phones that are sold out it has these amazing two words: Sold Out and some have some info about when they might be back in

If Apple added Verizon as an iPhone carrier, it would most likely work out that AT&T's service would improve and Verizon's would not change. The reason for this is because X percentage of existing Verizon customers would switch to the iPhone, Y percentage of existing AT&T customers would switch to Verizon. But not all of the existing iPhone customers with AT&T would switch to Verizon. In the end it would even out the load, improve service for most (if not all) and Apple would benefit by selling millions more iPhones. There is no good reason why Apple should stay with AT&T exclusively.

Just did my own check.....the phone seems to be unavailable in surrounding counties as well. Nassau County on Long Island and Westchester County both show as unavailable. Towns right on the border of Nassau County, in Suffolk County, show the phone as available. The same doesn't hold true for the same towns bordering Suffolk County. No option to buy.

This is ridiculous.

We're out of luck in Jersey too (take out the Jersey jokes now) Jersey City it's unavailable but as I move farther south to central Jersey where my parents are it's available. Plus hardly anyone in NYC has a NYC area code.

I would agree, no US carrier is prepared for a device such as the iPhone. All the carriers need to use their money in upgrading and less on advertising.
