Rumor: iPhone 3GS coming in 8GB size?

This morning's report from Electronista suggests that we may be seeing a slimmed-down capacity on the iPhone 3GS soon, taking over from the 8GB spot currently maintained by the $99 iPhone 3G holdover. A refurb buyer in Hamburg, Germany got a mixed-message box that contained the promised 3G phone but said "iPhone 3GS v2.2, 8GB." on the product label.

Packaging mix-up, or hint of things to come? Rumors were circulating of the 8GB 3GS back in early November, but didn't materialize. It may be another case of a stealth storage bump, which is exactly what happened back in 2008 with the 16GB units... so we'll keep an eye on those refurb pages and an ear to the ground.

Great. I just bought my wife a 3GS in 16 GB form. She needs neither the 16GB nor the compass that comes with it over my 3G with it's 8GB. Oh well, she was about to throw both of her blackberries down a sewer so I'll have that peace of mind.

It might happen when the release the iPhone 4G, that way the will always make the previous generation the cheap and low end one.

Agree, 8GB 3GS would be a great low end when there is a new 4 g mid and high level offering ...

Interesting but I just don't see much of a future in a 8GB device even for business use. The problem being the value seen in apps which take up um specified space.

On ther other hand it looks like Apple has successfully ramped 3GS production so it might be safe and cheaper now to concentrate on one logic board design for all models in the form factor. Especially if new models/form factors are coming.

So while the 8GB 3GS doesn't make sense from the users perspective it might make sense from Apples.

Personally, it looked to me like it was a misprint on the label.
