Two broken promises from AT&T and Apple as 2009 comes to a close

As I sit by the light of the Christmas tree in my mother's house with the vestiges of presents all around, it occurs to me that no matter how good Santa might have been to you, both Apple and AT&T left us lumps of coal for the end of 2009.

You might remember this promise from Apple a few months ago:

"Apple will support Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate) with Boot Camp in Mac OS X Snow Leopard before the end of the year. This support will require a software update to Boot Camp."

It is possible to run Windows 7 under Boot Camp, but given the number of months Windows 7 was available as a beta, and now the length of time it has been released officially, it's disappointing not to have it officially supported, especially given Apple's simple and unequivocal promise.

Boot Camp runs a distant second, however, to the much larger missed deadline and broken promise from AT&T that tethering would be available for the iPhone in 2009. Despite being available all around the world, and on other smartphones on AT&T's network, tethering remains unavailable for iPhone users in the USA unless you have stayed behind on firmware or have taken the jailbreak route.

Rogers / Fido customers in Canada have been enjoying free tethering until 2010, and their deal has been extended until May 3rd. Given the way that I expect most people will use tethering, for occasional connections when traveling or out and about, free is exactly the price that tethering ought to cost. Given AT&T's existing costs for Blackberry tethering, though, I would not be surprised if AT&T expects another $30/month on top of the current $30/month data charges.

When will we see Windows 7 Boot Camp support and tethering? I have no idea, but I fully expect Apple to come through before AT&T does.

"don't piss off your power users"

I wouldn't class people who buy a Mac just to run Windows as a "power user" from Apple's point of view. Apple's power users are designers and creative people and they couldn't be happier.

"To recap, if you have an Apple MacBook with a Cirrus Logic chipset you DO have a problem, you just might not have noticed."

If we haven't noticed, surely it's not a problem.

"Apple's unwillingness to support their customers as promised"

I refer you to your previous post when you directed us to laugh at this website: "http://www.apple.com/macosx/compatibility/". Nowhere on it does it say that Windows 7 was supported in Boot Camp, only XP and Vista. This page may get updated soon since now Apple does support Windows 7 as they promised. Yes, it's 19 days later than they hoped but does anyone remember how often Windows Vista was delayed?

"and so far I dissuaded 4 more people from getting an Apple computer."

Wow! Four? Apple must be shaking in their boots.

Apple has never truly supported Boot Camp or Windows. if you do it, its on you. you can't take it into the Bar for help etc. And they have been up front about this from the first announcement of Boot Camp.

so folks really shouldn't be screaming their heads off over this issue

now the whole ATT and tethering thing. or rather the 'our network is crap' thing (which is why tethering hasn't happened). that's worth some screaming.

To the "I never had a problem" crowd...

The new crop of MacBooks Pro uses a Cirrus Logic chipset, CS4206A to be precise.

The only way to get it to work ALMOST completely is through this guy's hacked drivers http://www.stuffedcow.net/macbook_audio but only in 32 bit versions.

64 bit users (moi for example) are still left in the cold. Last time I checked, there were thousands of angry customers on the Apple forums for exactly the same reason.

To recap, if you have an Apple MacBook with a Cirrus Logic chipset you DO have a problem, you just might not have noticed. If you're a skype user or you do anything else involved with audio, and don't use a USB soundcard, then there's no way you haven't noticed.

If you're ok to buy a computer and have it work just partially, I'm happy you're so low maintenance. For me it's not enough, and Apple's failings in this matter reminded me how it's never a good idea to rely on a lifestyle computer company to produce your work tools.

It's really a shame since the unibody macbook is probably the best designed computer on the market, and I'm not too happy to move back to Dell, Acer or Asus, but given Apple's unwillingness to support their customers as promised, I don't see any other choice.

The saddest part is that they just got some success at becoming more prevalent in the US market (the rest of the world is a completely different story) and they are already fucking up big time showing the usual chutzpa and disregard for their paying customers. It backfired in the past, and I'm 100% sure it will come back to haunt them very soon.

I'm one of those people that influence a lot of family, friends and acquaintances in their PC buying habits, and so far I dissuaded 4 more people from getting an Apple computer.

Microsoft already knows the mantra, don't piss off your power users or else, Vista taught them one thing or two, I doubt Apple will do the same.

Myself made the switch from PC to Mac years ago. Even now when I work on a PC for friends or at work, I find myself pulling my Mac out to perform what I need to do. Its just simpler, easier, and head ache free. I have found NO reason to even keep my W7 Bootcamp on my 15" MBP. I put it on and never used it. So I took it all off. However, I don't play any games aside for WoW, and most of my time on my computer is spent working or stumbling around the net. I carry my Mac into work because more often then not we use my Mac to do things it takes our supposed Hoss of a PC to long to do. The Mac versus PC debate is settled in my mind and for me.

As far as tethering, I expect when the contracts are up and un-jail broken Iphone users are finally able to move services. I believe AT&T will see a mass exodus. I also believe that should the new provider be Verizon, tethering is going to be used as a carrot on stick. Its a major sore spot for me. I for one, am literally waiting for the day to switch providers as soon as my contract is over. Whether I have to Jail break my phone or not.

I was tethering on my Bell iPhone 3GS for an entire 4-hour meeting yesterday here in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. It works brilliantly.

"all around the world" is wrong; O2 Ireland don't offer tethering yet, nor do we get visual voicemail.

Stop complaining ;-P

I've been running Windows 7 Pro 64bit on my 13 inch MacBook (the first white model with the 9400M) without any issues. Windows XP ran pretty terribly on it but Windows 7 runs like a champ.

Oh and to the guy asking why we don't just use VMWare etc I am a C# and XNA developer and I need to boot into the OS for full 3D graphics support. I prefer Mac OS X but do need to use Windows on a regular basis and would rather only have one computer to lug around (though I am tempted to build a dual booting Hackintosh to use at home).

Am I the only one who remembers Steve Jobs at the original iPhone announcement when he said the phone would switch from cell to wifi/VoIP seamlessly so as to save you some minutes?
