Congrats Palm: you've finally hit 1% of the App Store's total.

On September 27, 2005 Jon Rubinstein, Palm CEO and former Apple Vice President of the iPod Division, said Apple would be silly to get into the mobile handset marketplace:
Is there a toaster that also knows how to brew coffee? There is no such combined device, because it would not make anything better than an individual toaster or coffee machine. It works the same way with the iPod, the digital camera or mobile phone: it is important to have specialized devices.
We all know what's happened since – Apple dominates the smartphone market while Palm struggles. But you gotta give them something, don't you? So Palm, congratulations on finally crossing the thousand-app barrier. Give us a ring in 2024 when you pass the 25,000 app mark.

the only thing that makes me wanna stop reading TUAW are the ridiculous and unnecessary comments some of you post.
this is a freaking blog people. get over yourselves. i'd rather all of you that threatened to leave actually do so i can read some insightful comments instead of the drool i have to put up with daily.
i love the writing and the writers. i have no association with either.
i'm an absolute fan of the product and the site.

please keep it coming so we can drive these tools out of here.

Though I am an iPhone developer, I should say this - Appstore is clogged with useless apps which makes the 100,000+ number growing as we speak. Palm just came in, please don't ditch it and please don't make it vanish (I have 0 stocks in either company btw).. Competition is good, Palm is opening up access to the hardware, lets see what they come up with.

TUAW - keep writing about Apple and don't try to influence the competitor's stock. Don't be a B...

What this article does not point out is that Rubinstein made this statement WHILE WORKING FOR APPLE. He did not work for Palm until 2007. Apple is well known for stating the opposite of their intentions.

You can keep yapping all you want Tom but if the majority of commenters believe this post is "pretentious" and "snarky" then it probably is in some way. Even most fanboys aren't assholes about it.... but obviously you prove there are exceptions to that.

I demand an apology. And a small plate of cookies. And milk.

Actually, the pretentious tone of pretentious comments like yours demonstrates quite dramatically that many Apple users ARE snobs.

Yes, the post is a bit snarky. Where's the harm in that? I think a little schadenfreude is in order given the obnoxious ubiquity of anti-iPhone advertisements (which is in entirely in order from competitors who are trying to take market share). It's not okay to return fire? That's somehow crass or beneath the level of acceptable discourse for the cucumber sammiches-and-tea contingent of Apple enthusiasts?

A little bare knuckle pit fighting cleanses the palate and sharpens the senses. Why not, I say!
