Ford to offer iTunes tagging in their cars
Just as 2009 was ending, Ford announced that they'll be offering a new option in their cars for 2010: the ability to "tag" any songs you happen to hear on the radio for later purchase in iTunes. It'll be an option, so it won't come standard in the new Taurus you buy, but if you opt for the HD Radio, the stereo will have a "tag" button that will capture the information of whatever you're hearing, sync it to your connected iPod and then bring it up for purchase in iTunes the next time you're at your computer. It sounds like a win-win for everybody: Ford gets to sell HD Radios, radio stations get more listener involvement, and Apple and the music companies get your sales (presuming you complete the purchase). It'd be nice to have the song automatically sent to iTunes (or even transmitted via Bluetooth to your iPhone -- maybe even via an official app -- next time it happens to be near the car), but one step at a time, I guess. Don't forget that you don't even need this option to mark any music you happen to hear: if you have an iPhone, you can use Shazam's iPhone app to listen in, tell you whatever the song is, and save it for purchase later if you want. It's a free download in iTunes, lots cheaper than a brand new car.

In related news, GM finally installs an adapter in their cars so you can listen to music on an MP3 player.

And it plays most audio formats -- but not flac!!! ohmigod.
This is a Mac site, so the fact that it will offer this is highlighted. I'm sure it's worked out so that it will do much the same with any player that accepts tags and can buy things from the web. Why not?
And you may not know yet, but there's no DRM on an iPod or in iTunes any more, except for Audible and the film studios, who insist on DRM. Of course, those tracks play with Sync.
If this keeps people from farting around with Shazam/Midomi apps on their iPhone while driving then it should be a mandatory safety feature on all cars.

We're about three decades overdue for that. I'm pretty sure we can manage to buy songs without any help from your R & D.
Is Ford working on an upgrade to the cup holders for 2020?
Indeed, because certainly the guys who work R&D on the Sync interfaces and such have skills that allow them to work on engine/composite designs that would help with fuel economy.

January 02 2010 at 6:13 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat's interesting, just another way to intrude on people, I hope this is just optional and not a built in feature, I'll pass, I think i can remember the songs I like on my own thanks.

@SamTheGeek
The Fusion, the Mondeo and up to the previous model the Taurus, too, are/were actually all in the same size classification: mid-size (USA), large-family car (EuroNCAP and UK) or D segment (European Commission).
Only with the 2008 model the Taurus has been upgraded to full-size for the US, I understand. Oh, and the European Ford Fusion is something way different from the North-American model. Just Google it. ;-)
This is pathetic.
"Tagging" songs for later purchase. It's 2010 and Ford is offering the ability to "tag" tunes for later purchase. How many people are there on this planet who will use this option even once? 99% of the already cold-in-its-grave Clear Channel controlled FM consists of six songs. Five of them are Lady Gaga, the other is Miley Cyrus. Assuming a person DID want to buy one of those songs, and assuming they couldn't remember the song (having heard it eighteen times on the morning drive), are we assuming they are going to use something other than a piece of paper, or cellphone to note the song? Does Ford seriously believe a person will pull over or worse, attempt to manipulate some crappy steering wheel menu navigation tool while driving to click BUY IT on their radio?
And you just KNOW this won't be a one click thing. You just know. There will be like eight menus to navigate to buy one Lady Gaga song... LATER! Since you can't even purchase it right there. They're touting a feature to "flag" the song for later purchase.
Christ.
No wonder American auto makers are doomed.
Are they also going to have the ability to "flag" a bagel for later purchase at Safeway? "Flag" a coffee for purchase at Starbucks. All of these things sound so futuristic and cool until you realize that just going to a Starbucks drive-through, or walking into a Safeway, or just buying the song outright on your 3G connected iPhone is a whole hell of a lot easier than trying to use your FREAKING CAR as a $30,000 post-it.
Idiots.
Sorry the rest of us are not up to your high standards, Tom. Look, you're listening to a station on HD radio and it offers tags. I'd be willing to bet that's cross-platform, and that the Zune will accept tags, and maybe others.
This is very simple. People drive along listening to music, and they realize that "Hey, I like that song. Let me mark it to buy it later." You've just described how I bought most of my music in the '60s, except the radio didn't remember it for me. I know there's squat on the radio any more, but that isn't Sync's fault.
Funny how adding a single button to a radio can elicit so much emotion...
