HTC and other OEMs prepared to challenge the iSlate

The Apple tablet, whether you want to call it the iSlate, the iTablet, or "Betty," hasn't even been verified to exist at this point. However, that's not keeping other manufacturers from coming out with their own competition to the mythical device.

At this year's Consumer Electronics Show, which runs from Thursday, January 7th through Sunday, January 10th, several vendors may be showing devices to compete with an Apple design that hasn't even been leaked, cheesy specs notwithstanding.

Mobile handset heavyweight HTC, the same company that will debut the new Google Nexus One Android phone on January 5th, is expected to have a tablet ready to show at CES. HTC is an OEM, so it's not likely that a tablet will appear under the HTC label. Instead, traditional PC sellers such as ASUS, HP, and Dell will probably announce devices that have been designed and built by HTC or other OEMs.

HTC isn't the only company jumping into the tablet fray; Freescale Semiconductor will be showing a "tablet reference design" at CES as well. The Freescale device (at right) has a 7" display and is designed to take up about one-third the volume of a current netbook. Freescale's tablet will be shown running both Google Android OS and some variety of Linux, and is rumored to have "all day" battery life and instant-on functionality.

While the HTC and Freescale tablets are designed for sale by other companies, an Indian startup called Notion Ink will be showing a 10.1" touchscreen device at CES that they have designed and will build. Even Microsoft could get into the CES tablet action by having CEO Steve Ballmer demonstrate the Courier device.

The announcements are sure to place some price pressure on Apple: Freescale's design is intended for retail prices in the $200 range, much less than the $600 - $1,000 expected for Apple's device. Of course, Apple is all about the design, functionality, and user experience of their devices and software, and the capabilities of the tablet will need to show perceived value to potential customers. One thing is for sure -- tablets have sparked the imagination of the public and manufacturers, and we're going to hear a lot about them in the upcoming year.

Having used tablet PCs I personally think one of their main advantages is they provide the third most natural way of entering and manipulating information (the other two being speech and thought).

They've mainly been confined to the business and education sectors though because of price.

Last year I speculated that the touch features of Windows 7 could see an influx of consumer orientated tablets to compete with the HP tx series (the only consumer focussed tablet at the time).

Maybe it will turn out to be Apple who bring the tablet computer to the masses, either with a device of their own or another company releasing a device to compete.

In defense of Balmer and the other "ass-hats" as you call them, the cell phone industry is difficult and no one could have forseen that Apple had bet the farm on the success of the iPhone, and had brought every competitive impulse to bear on the problem. At MS its best people were not in the mobile space, same at Dell, Palm....well they had little cash, people were sending out resume's .
Disruptive technology for the win.

Tablets are nothing new. And so far, they have failed in the marketplace. There is no "first mover advantage" to be had.

I just wanted to clear that up. It seems like most bloggers/journalist think the expected Apple tablet is the first tablet to be invented.

I suspect the various iSlate (or iWhatever) competitors will fail. Why? Because it's not about the hardware. It's about the:

hardware + software + content (distribution) = whole experience (solution)

Dell, Microsoft, HTC, etc. cannot out do Apple in the whole experience. Let's face it, Microsoft's software sucks. Dell? HTC?

Remember Apple wasn't the first to do a portable music player. Creative who?

Disclaimer: I do own AAPL, and plan to buy more.

One more thing® ...

Apple of course wasn't the first to do a "cell phone". And, we all know how many "experts" like Balmer and the then Palm CEO du jour made ass-hats of themselves by laughing at Jobs and his new iPhone. Something about how "complicated" the cell phone market was, and how Jobs couldn't figure it out.

Yes, competition is good. I think that cell phone / tablet competitors have learned the lesson of not being blindsided by Apple, like they were by the iPhone in 2007. Apple has forced others to innovate to stay alive (case-in-point: PALM). Now, if they could only learn how to design like Apple...

OMG it would be HILARIOUS if Apple never actually came out with the 'iSlate'.

Why does everyone have to wait until CES to make an announcment? Can't we just "leak" the news now? ;D

And are we limited to how many of these things we can purchase if/when a Tablet comes out? If not, give me 10 please! Ok. maybe just one. If it ever comes out!

Oh well... Competition is good. Has anyone called any of these the "iSlate killer" yet? I hate that term. Why does everything have to be an "iPhone killer", or "iPod killer", etc.?
