WSJ: Apple tablet device to be 10 inches, "shipping in March."

Things are beginning to firm up on the specs of the rumored tablet device. According to the Wall Street Journal, who interviewed people who were apparently briefed today on the subject by Apple, "Apple plans to unveil a new multimedia tablet device later this month, but doesn't plan on shipping the product until March. While the shipping time hasn't been finalized and could change, people briefed on the matter said the new tablet device will come with a 10- to 11-inch touch screen." Apple is apparently also working on two different material finishes for the device. Unknown is whether or not there will be two versions or if Apple is selecting one finish over another for the final device.

This overlaps with a few predictions on the topic naming 10" as the proposed size of the device, and adds yet another example where rumor has risen above the tech/Apple blogosphere to more general news sources.

All eyes on the January 27th event.

My guess is that the tablet won't run Mac OSX. Why? Because if the screen is 10" or even 11", the tablet would have to come with a stylus to push the smaller buttons on Mac OS X and I don't know about you but I don't see Apple shipping a stylus with any of their products!

Rumors, News, Mac 101, keep em all coming TUAW!! Since discovering you (from Engadget) you and fellow readers been an invaluable source of information and discussion, especially since becoming a Mac user.

Regarding rumors, they're great! Nothing sparks discussion and conjecture like a well made photoshop, blurrycam picture, or some incomplete ambiguous information from "sources which don't wish to be named". It's gossip for geeks! :D

@ ABCNEWSER.com

This is a WEBLOG... not a news site. Rumors, etc... are standard fair. If you want nothing but straight news, hit up the many news sites available. WSJ, NYT, USA Today, CNN, etc...

@rich: USAnewser.com is going to be mighty disappointed if he turns to the WSJ and the NYT. Even USAToday. They've all written extensively on this "rumor" as well. In fact, this whole post was prompted by insider information given to the WSJ and reported by them. It would be quite a lapse of purpose for us, an Apple blog, to ignore the whole subject under the guise that it's mere rumor.

This is dumb. My MacRumors feed shows up, I check in 30 minutes and... Hey! It's the same story on TUAW.

TUAW has broken news before too. I enjoy getting a good perspective on rumors, and that's what the other readers enjoy about this site too.

Heh, TUAW has a Twitter account too for stuff that's breaking. A blog post doesn't take 10 seconds to write. Please respect the bloggers here and their content. They do a great job.

TUAW, keeping doing what you do; rumor or news doesn't matter to me, because I like reading the Comments more than the article. Why? I learn more "useful" information from the comments.

The tablet is an ancient concept and Apple is the one company to revitalise it!

This was a good, timely post. It's very much considered "news," and it's good to get this information to readers. It might not be completely for sure, but there's a solid source backing it.

This is different from just someone mocking up a tablet in Photoshop, and I'm sure we're all waiting for any news we can get like this.

Would be great if they focused more on news and less on rumors. Remember how EVERYONE was saying, OMG OMG the Beatles are going to be on iTunes FINALLY Z0MG...

Then everyone was disappointed. Let sleeping dogs lie. Sheesh.
