Report: One-fifth of smart phone buyers want Android

Those incessant Droid ads are working, as consumer interest is climbing.

Last December, ChangeWave Research conducted a study to determine what kinds of smartphones shoppers want. As in previous surveys, the iPhone topped the list. However, 21% of the 4,068 consumers who stated their intention to buy a smartphone within 90 days said they wanted the Android OS -- a 15-point jump from the last poll taken in September. Just 3 months ago, Android was tied for last place in consumer preference.

Even though Apple's share of those planned purchases is down 4%, it's still positioned to do extremely well. In ChangeWave's research, the dropoff in sales following the introduction of the 3GS (12 points) is a big improvement when compared to the post-3G introduction drop (26 points).

The competition is getting intense and you know what that means: better products for us as the manufacturers try to outdo each other! May the best gadget win!

Android is a good system and its good that S/E is embracing an existing OS and providing a platform for it. The competition between Apple and Google is a very promising thing for consumers of smartphones, I look forward to seeing what comes out of it.More information from http://www.sourcinggate.com/smart-cell-phone-c-174.html

The Droid is like a new girlfriend, fun for about a month, maybe six weeks, and then everyone is over it.

I couldn't care less about Google's phone.

My iPhone is what I want in a phone with the exception of AT&T (who I HATE). When the iPhone becomes available on another network, I'm more likely to simply jump networks... I don't see me switching to Google's little hype machine. Besides, the interface (for the Nexus One) is atrocious.

I am not a corporate person but have been using smartphones for as long as they've existed. Tried all sorts of phones and couldn't settle on any until the iPhone launched -- it's so much more intuitive and syncs seamlessly with the Mac.

I was thinking of getting rid of my jailbroken 3GS and getting the Apple Tablet (assuming it will sport all the smart bits of the smartphone) and a cheap Nokia, but I've changed my mind... I'll maybe get the tablet and the 4th gen iPhone on contract next July.

I think the time frame for this question is very relevant. Most people are aware that Apple is likely to release a new iPhone this summer. Had the question been likely to purchase in the next year, the results may have been quite different.

Who cares? 90% of the world's sheep use windows. There's no mobile phone pissing contest so who cares who wants what isn't made by Apple?

90% of the world use windows because they're sheep??? this is laughably classic! the world uses windows because the platform is well-integrated in business applications.

you wanna see a fanbase built on sheep? ask any sorority girl what laptop the cool, trendy girls use. ain't gonna be windows.

i love my macbook (which i use with rane scratch live, and all adobe apps), but let's be realistic as to why they're so popular lately.

Hey Mr. Jobs, the barbarians are at the gate. What's your plan?

Time for Apple to step it up a notch. New hardware, upgraded OS, and MORE CARRIERS, STAT!

I choose to hope that Apple has everything carefully planned and under control, but if they drop the ball (which is clearly in their possession right now) for domination of the mobile computing space I may never forgive them.

Please don't make the iPhone the Mac 2.0 (regarding Apple's missteps that allows Microsoft to dominate desktop computing).

i find it interesting that people still want an iPhone during the onslaught of Android Hype that we're getting battered with for the past few months.

Android has been able to gain a lot of traction for a few reasons; it's really good, and the hardware is awesome; but timing has been their biggest contributor - Apple has been in the "dormant" part of their cycle during the launch and hyping of Droid, Eris, and N1. Once the lion wakes up, and all of Apple's new stuff hits, nobody will mention Android for at least a solid month.

I'm waiting for Exchange and MobileMe support with an Android phone, then I'm jumping to it. AT&T is killing me.

Good luck with MobileMe support. Android has first-class support for GMail, but I wouldn't expect them to push you away from a product that brings Google ad revenue. Still, anything is possible...
